Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke has new main priority after $249m transfer spend with Mikel Arteta aim

[ UK TV LIVE ]

Stan Kroenke is aiming to keep up his record of winning major honours in American sport as the Arsenal owner watches his NFL side, LA Rams, get down to business when the league returns this weekend.

The Rams, who dropped off massively last season compared to their historic title-winning 2021 campaign, are looking to bounce back after an embarrassing campaign last time out that saw them win just five of their 17 matches. It was the worst season they have had since 2017 and was a long way from the response hoped for.

Although Sean McVay, one of the best coaches in the sport, is in a transition period with the side, there is hope that they can bring together results and performances that better match the franchise's ambition. For Kroenke, their 2021 success was the start of a sensational period for him.

After lifting the Super Bowl, Kroenke, who took over Arsenal as majority shareholder in 2011, also went on to see his NBA franchise, Denver Nuggets, win the championship as well as taking NHL victory with Colorado Avalanche and NLL winnings under Colorado Mammoth.

Arsenal, who finished runners-up in the Premier League last year, are now the outstanding team left to win a major title under Kroenke's Sports and Entertainment (KSE) empire.

The Gunners have become vastly improved in the past 24 months with Kroenke's son, Josh, taking on a key role in the rebuild under popular Spanish manager Mikel Arteta. Josh Kroenke was recently given even more day-to-day responsibility in north London, changing his role at the club as new co-chair along with his father.

Josh has played a massive part in bringing back the togetherness at the club with sporting director Edu Gaspar and Arteta also being influential characters. It came at a key time for Stan Kroenke as his standing within the club had fallen massively in the fallout from years of mediocrity and then the European Super League fiasco.

Now, with the Gunners starting strongly in their attempts to follow up an unexpected title charge with yet another push to be champions, Kroenke's investment into the club's transfers have lead to added pressure on Arteta to end the 20-year wait.

Arsenal spent over £200million ($249m) on new players including Declan Rice and Kai Havertz, adding depth and quality to their squad but will shortly see Kroenke's attentions turn once again towards his USA-based priorities.

The real estate tycoon has, for years now, been widely criticised for his lack of direct involvement with the club but if he can bring continued success despite this then it will be of little worry to those filling the terraces whilst things are going well. Kroenke also has the demands of the expectant Rams fans to meet and will very soon be ready for his side to return to the state-of-the-art SoFi Stadium.

For now, it's also the international break and his presence at Arsenal isn't warranted either. Arsenal are back in action with a game against Everton at Goodison Park on September 17. Before then, the Rams kick off their season away to Seattle Seahawks before playing San Francisco 49ers at home hours after Arsenal's match in Merseyside finishes.
