Defender joins, Smith Rowe and Gabriel sold - Arsenal's best and worst transfer deadline day

[ UK TV LIVE ]

After two months and a couple of weeks, this is it. Transfer Deadline day is here and Arsenal have until 11pm to finalise any business in terms of incomings.

The Gunners have been active all summer with manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Edu Gaspar bolstering the first-team squad with the signings of Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber and Declan Rice for a combined fee of just over £200million whilst also bringing in goalkeeper David Raya on a season-long loan deal.

However, as Jurrien Timber is sidelined with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, the Arsenal boss may have to dip back into the market for defensive reinforcements, especially after loaning out Kieran Tierney and with Nuno Tavares, Cedric Soares and Rob Holding all free to depart before the window closes.

Therefore, the key question is what will the general mood be amongst Gunners supporters come 11pm when the Transfer Deadline officially passes and they are reflecting on the business Arteta and sporting director Edu will have completed in totality over the past two months?

History suggests there will be some movement at the Emirates Stadium today, whether that be incomings, outgoings, or both, so, Arsenal fans brace yourself for a hectic transfer deadline day as football.london takes you through what would be the best and worst-case scenario.

Best case

Arsenal's main priorities this summer - in terms of incomings - have been completed long before deadline day. An upgrade on Matt Turner has been secured with Raya to provide Aaron Ramsdale with even stronger competition, Havertz has replaced Granit Xhaka and Timber was showing signs of being an astute signing prior to his unfortunate injury.

And let's not forget the Gunners smashed their transfer record to recruit Rice from West Ham United for £105million to further bolster the midfield department. Much credit must go to Arteta and Edu and in the perfect scenario, they would have their feet up on deadline day knowing business is done.

But Timber's injury might change things. If it was up to Arsenal supporters, a replacement would be signed before 11pm and there are also calls for the addition of a forward to provide cover and competition for Bukayo Saka. But that seems like something that will be addressed in January.

This summer has also seen the club attempt to improve their sales record. In allowing Pablo Mari, Xhaka, Auston Trusty, Turner and Folarin Balogun to depart on permanent transfers, the Gunners have recouped around £75million and there's still time to raise even more through Holding, Albert Sambi Lokonga, Nicolas Pepe, Cedric and Arthur Okonkwo.

Admittedly, large fees for the quintet are unlikely but if Arsenal can strike deals to take money raised from sales to around the £100million mark as well as signing a defender, that would be very impressive and represent a deadline day beyond even the most optimistic fans' wildest dreams.

Worst-case

If the Gunners do not make a further signing before the 11pm deadline then it's likely to be seen as an opportunity missed rather than the worst-case scenario being realised as there is an argument that Arteta has enough strength in depth to cope with Premier League, Champions League and Carabao Cup action until January.

However, if the window closes and no business has been done then it will be a concern especially as Arteta will have to make a decision on which players to leave out of his Premier League and Champions League squads as the limit is 25 and Arsenal have begun deadline day with a 30-man first-team squad.

Speaking of departures, Emile Smith Rowe and Gabriel Magalhaes have both been linked with moves away. The former to Chelsea and the latter has attracted interest from the Saudi Pro League.

It's safe to assume that the reaction amongst the majority of Arsenal fans if either player, let alone both, is allowed to leave tonight would not be positive. In Gabriel's case, it would be a disaster if he departed and wasn't replaced as the Gunners are already gambling with their defensive options as it is.
