Arsenal chief's comments speak volumes as Gunners gear up for crucial transfer window

Arsenal director Tim Lewis has praised the ‘extraordinary’ atmosphere at the Emirates Stadium and has pledged that the Gunners board will back Mikel Arteta with transfer funds this summer. It is a clear sign that the North Londoners are heading in the right direction despite a dismal slip-up in the Premier League.

Arteta’s side bowed out of the 2022-23 Premier League season with a thumping 5-0 win over Wolves. But it could have been a far more triumphant weekend for Arsenal had they not suffered a horrid run of form just as the title appeared to be in their grasp.

However, non-executive director Lewis has exemplified just how far Arsenal have come in a short space of time. The American pointed out that the atmosphere inside the Emirates Stadium has been extraordinary’ and hinted at a far more positive culture inside the club.

"It's been a brilliant season with many important moments and memories made in an extraordinary Emirates atmosphere the like of which we have never experienced here," Lewis wrote in a statement from the boardroom.

"60,000 supporters have sung a new anthem and generated an energy which connects with our players and drives them on. Something special has been restored and shared by Gooners here and across the world.

"Sincere thanks go to everyone connected to the club - from our owners to all supporters - for the unstinting support you have given our teams and staff throughout the season. We'll reset this summer and, with the resolute support we have from Stan and Josh, strengthen to go again next season."

Lewis’ words suggest that Arteta is set to be backed with huge funds ahead of the summer transfer window. Qualifying for the Champions League expands Arsenal’s scope in terms of resources as the profile of player who will jump at the chance of signing for the Gunners.

Arsenal are likely to strengthen in midfield over the coming months, especially with Granit Xhaka likely heading to Bayer Leverkusen. The Swiss midfielder struck a brace in the thrashing of Wolves on Sunday in a perfect farewell.

West Ham captain Declan Rice is reportedly Arsenal’s top target heading into the summer. The Emirates Stadium hierarchy reportedly face competition from Bayern Munich, though, and the Hammers are demanding a fee exceeding £100m.

Brighton star Moises Caicedo is another target for Arsenal. Arteta tried to sign the Ecuadorian during the January transfer window but the Seagulls insisted that he would not be sold.
