Here’s a quick look at what the Great Bend USD 428 Board of Education made on Monday:

• Recognized career milestones

The Milestone program is based on five-year increments, which recognizes years of service of authorized and ranked employees. Employees who achieve significant milestones will receive a token of appreciation from the district for their longevity and commitment. Employees who achieve milestones of 20, 25 and 30 years will be recognized.

• I heard a report on the adoption of the upcoming secondary school math curriculum

The 7-12 Math Curriculum Committee submitted their selections for adopting secondary math resources for the pilot.

Approved the purchase of a wrestling mat.

In February, the board approved the bid specifications for 372 linear feet of padded wainscoting for the East Campus wrestling hall at 1721 24th St. USA Gymnastics & Supply Inc. submitted the only bid, for $ 24,250, which was approved.

• Heard an update on the fleet management agreement and approved the lease of 10 fully maintained Chevrolet Traverses for a total of $7,272.90 per month for 36 months.

At their February meeting, board members approved a no-cost/no-obligation agreement with Enterprise to allow the company to evaluate the district’s vehicle fleet and propose options for evaluation. Assistant Superintendent John Popp provided an update.

• Continued a discussion of district goals.

Superintendent Khris Thexton and board members continue to develop new district goals related to $428.

• Approved a JAG-K memorandum,

The board approved the $428 memorandum of understanding/partnership agreement to extend the Jobs for America’s Graduates-Kansas (JAG-K) program for the 2023-2024 middle and high school year. The program costs $33,660 ($11,220 per program), with no increases from 2022-2023. However, there is an increase of $980 per program for the 2024-2025 school year.

• Revised the 2023-2024 school calendar and the development of the 2024-25 school calendar.

• Heard reports from the assistant superintendent which included information on the Kansas Education Systems Accreditation External Validation Panel (KESA) study; state ratings; a new Vape Task Force; the upcoming information fair on pre-enrollment in kindergarten and preschool; Great Bend Convention and Business Bureau’s Be Our Guest Academy and Staff Updates.

• Listened to the superintendent’s report, which included a legislative update, mini-grant update, Kansas Teacher of the Year banquet news, project updates, and staff appreciation.

In appreciation of USD 428 employees, staff members were invited to participate in free bowling, appetizers and prizes at the Walnut Bowl this Friday, March 10, 3:30-5:30 p.m.

• Scholarships and grants approved.

• Personnel changes approved.

• Met in an executive session for 5 minutes to discuss the performance of an individual employee, in compliance with the personnel exception under the Kansas Open Meetings Act.
