Grill in quail corners

White tablecloths, affordable American cuisine, and cozy candlelight all set the stage for an easy date in Reno. And grilled in quail corners delivers on all fronts.

The diner next door to Lakeside has a simple Menu with mouth-watering descriptions. Seafood is plentiful, overpriced but not pretentious, and there is sure to be a dish on the menu that will please everyone.

If you’re here for the experience, you’ll need to start with a snack. Roasted young artichokes are a favorite. You will not grind your teeth to extract small pieces of vegetable, as in most preparations. Instead, you can simply munch on soft, young artichokes that are buttery and herbal in Flavor. The stem, which you probably usually avoid with an artichoke, is the most flavorful part, and it’s easy enough to cut with a fork.

While the artichokes themselves carry a lot of flavor, the dish is also Served with a generous helping of herbal citrus aioli, perfect for dipping your bites. Each bite exudes a rich flavor and the leaves almost melt in your mouth.

Other options include traditional salads, clam cocktail (with shrimp, shrimp and crab), and fried ahi with serrano soy dipping sauce.

One of my favorite features of The Grill menu is the signature plates. The small plates serve as a smaller dinner for those with a lighter appetite, or a shared plate if you choose several.

From Dungeness crabs and bacon and mac and cheese to manila clams called steamers, these little bites are filling enough to fill many, but are also easy to share. The same approach to seafood exists here: fried colossal prawns and mussels are served alongside tomatoes, shallots, basil and dijon.

For those who can’t turn down a steak, a 6-ounce grated New York steak is a great option. The steak is cooked to order and drizzled with a bright and spicy (but not overly spicy) chimichurri sauce that adds spice and flavor. It is served on a bed of duck fat fries, cooked to a perfect golden crust with extra flavor.

If you’re looking for an “old school” menu, the main course collection is a bit different from what you’d expect from a modern American restaurant, but with a few surprises. Again, seafood lovers will be delighted to see ciopino on the menu. This soup dish is filled with crab, manila clams, tiger prawns, scallops, mussels and market fish in a spicy tomato broth. On the side, you’ll get garlic crostini and a bowl to get rid of the shells in.

Those looking for something savory can try soft short ribs served with creamy mashed potatoes and stewed spinach, or indulge in bacon-wrapped scallops served with the chef’s risotto and seasonal vegetables. The chardonnay shallot sauce is creamy and delicious, and drizzled over scallop risotto for even more flavor.

And while you might not expect it, there’s also a range of Italian-style pizzas on the menu, from the classic margherita to the Sicilian with prosciutto and mushrooms.

The cocktail list is a line of classic drinks that offer a little twist. Maple Manhattan will lure someone in, and hot buttered rum will warm you from the inside – just what we all need when snow storms rage.

Of course, there is also a wine and beer list to pair with. And it would be remiss not to mention the daily specials. Although they change frequently, they are sure to grab your attention and often contain fresh ingredients to match the seasons.
