THE JAR – Runner-up Centauri High School’s girls’ basketball team had little trouble with Centauri in the first round of the Class 3A State Tournament, as the Lady Falcons defeated the Lady Bruins 55-13 on Friday in CHS Gymnasium.

Abbey Smith got Centauri off to a good start with a 3-point field goal, followed by Caitlin Creel with a jumper. Libby Brooks scored Cedaredge’s first points, but the Lady Falcons scored their next 14 points for a 19-2 lead. Brooks hit one of the two from the free throw line, but Joselyn McCarroll scored in the closing seconds to give Centauri a 21–3 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Amaya Garcia hit two in a row and Smith added another to extend the lead to 27-5. Carley Malinowski hit one free throw in three, but Smith scored on the line and Creel scored in the box for a 30-6 lead.

Izzy Cerise hit a layup and added a free throw for Cedaredge, but Centauri led at the half with a score of 30-9.

The Lady Falcons got off to another strong start to the second half, scoring their first 13 points of the third quarter. Hailey Hayes-Pursley scored the first points of the Lady Bruins period, but Smith hit two layups. Sammy Dennison scored for Cedaredge, but Centauri led 47-13 at the end of the period.

The second half of the fourth quarter was played under the clock with Centauri scoring eight points and holding the Lady Bruins scoreless.

Smith led all scorers with 16 points and outscored Cedaredge by herself. Garcia scored nine points and Creel added eight.

Libby Brooks, Izzy Cerise and Malinowski each scored three points to lead Cedaredge.

Centauri (20-2) will face Olathe in the regional championship today at noon. Olathe advanced defeating Brush 56-44.
