Last year, Alamo leaders decided they wanted a local supermarket and gas station to compete with rival businesses outside the city that sell alcohol, Holaday told county commissioners.

“It doesn’t look like there’s a bar on every corner in town,” he said. County law prohibits the sale of alcohol within 1,500 feet (457 meters) of a church, school, or other liquor business.

A Las Vegas convenience store chain has offered to add a motel, gas station and liquor market to a former truck stop it purchased near the Alamo, Holiday told the Review-Journal. The chain already sells alcohol at a store 7 miles (11 km) from Ash Springs.

Holaday did not immediately respond to a message left by the Associated Press at his 16-room Alamo Inn business hotel.

Varlin Higbee, the county commissioner who owns the Alamo ranch, noted in an email that liquor licensees still must meet city and county requirements.

“There won’t be an over-the-counter bar in the Alamo, zoning laws won’t allow it,” Higbee told the AP on Wednesday.
