More than 700 hectares of land were burned near Spring Valley Road in Flowerdale after a fire broke out Tuesday afternoon.

The Victorian Emergency Management Authority said it was one of the “most significant fires” they have seen this season.

About 100 firefighters are working to put out the fire.

The “Watch and Act” warning remains in effect for Dairy Creek, Flowerdale, Homewood, Kerrisdale, Strath Creek, and Strath Creek along Upper King Parrot Creek Road.

CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan said conditions are constantly changing and the warning level could be raised.

“Residents in the warning zone are advised to stay near the shelter,” he said.

“Residents need to be aware, monitor conditions and be ready to act.”

Senior meteorologist Kevin Parkin of the Bureau of Meteorology said Victoria is at the epicenter of a heat wave and “real drastic change” won’t happen until Saturday.

“The heat, combined with the wind, is what will increase the fire risk in the next few days,” he said.

“We have a high fire risk on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and it looks like we will have an emergency fire risk in Wimmer on Friday.”

Hopefully the fire will be out by Thursday

No houses were lost and no one was hurt, but fire authorities said the terrain made it difficult for firefighters to do their job.

“We’re trying to contain this fire by 5:00 pm or 5:00 tomorrow,” said CFA controller Dave Bowden.

“We believe that we will have quite favorable weather to do this today, as well as tonight. Probably less gusty wind than yesterday.”

“Six large bulldozers to help us draw a containment line around the fire,” Mr. Bowden said.

The CFA stated that the Whittlesey Yea road between Daery Creek Road and Break O’Day Road was closed.

Murrindee County Councilor Sue Carpenter said she was confident lessons had been learned from the Black Saturday wildfires and the fire would not threaten the community.

“We just keep our fingers crossed that things have improved with the authorities since then and that they are throwing so many people, trucks, planes into the fire,” she told ABC Radio Melbourne.

“I just hope people keep their confidence.”

A “watch and act” warning has also been issued in connection with a wildfire in Wildwood, near Sunbury, which has not yet been brought under control.
