Wrestlers from Fort Collins compete in state wrestling

DENVER — The always hectic Colorado State wrestling tournament is back at Ball Arena.

The annual high school wrestling championship takes place Thursday through Saturday in Denver and features 43 wrestlers from Fort Collins.

Among them are 35 boy wrestlers, led by a dozen from Class 4A No. 2 Windsor and eight more from Class 5A No. 7 Poudre. There are also eight girls who qualified from Fort Collins in just the third season that the CHSAA sanctioned girls wrestling.

The event started on Thursday with the first round for boys 2A/3A and all girls in the afternoon, followed by boys 4A/5A in the evening. Stay tuned here for updates throughout the weekend.

The Wizards are second in the 4A rankings and have eight regional winners. On Thursday they had seven first round winners. Here are the full results for Windsor:

  • 106 pounds: James Pantoya WON in the fall in the 2nd period against Brody Hufford (Skyline). Pantoja advances to the quarterfinals on Friday to face Thompson Valley’s Gabe Hall.
  • 113: Robert Kendall WON by Major Decision (13-2) vs. Tavina Mori (Thompson Valley). Kendall will take on Durango’s Ryan Dugan in Friday’s quarter-final round.
  • 120: Zach Eaton WON by decision (6-0) vs. David Valdez (Greeley Central). Eaton advances to Friday’s quarter-finals against Thompson Valley’s Jaxen Raredon.
  • 126: John Kenny WON in fall 2nd period against Will Guerra (Mid). Kenny will take on Lewis Palmer’s Thomas Blackmon in Friday’s quarter-finals.
  • 138: Haase Haase WON by Major Decision (11-2) vs. Jesse Riopelle (Canon City). Haase will take on Pueblo County’s Boden White in Friday’s quarterfinals.

The Impalas are Fort Collins’ strongest team, finishing 7th in Class 5A and qualifying the city’s eight wrestlers. They advanced to the quarter-finals on Thursday with a first-round win.

  • 106: Markus Beckedahl WON in the fall in the 2nd period against Nicholas Vasquez (Adams City). Bekkedal will face Pine Creek’s Griffin Rial in Friday’s quarter-finals.
  • 132: Billy Greenwood WON by technical fall (17-2) against Abraham Pomeroy (Boulder). Greenwood advances to Friday’s quarter-finals against Pomona’s Angel Serrano.
  • 138: Nico Beckedal WON in the fall in the 3rd period against Caden Ontiveros (Castle View). Bekkedal will take on Ponderosa’s Brandon Cannon in Friday’s quarter-finals.

  • 144: Alex Husen Lost in the fall in the 2nd period to Dustin Huber (Douglas County). Hoosen will face Mountain Vista’s Brennen Long in a repechage match.
  • 150: Max Buffington LOST by decision (21-8) vs. Banks Norby (Pudre). Buffington will face Legacy’s Gideon Butler in the repechage round.

Wellington wrestler reached state in his first year at school

Tanner Gray (285) LOST 1st period fall to top seed Aidan Trujillo (Valley) in the first round. Gray will Face Florence’s Weston Sweigart in a repechage match.

This is the first year the Wellington wrestling program is back in school after 60+ years.

Three girls from the Poudre School District advanced to the quarterfinals

The PSD women’s team qualified six girls for the state competition, three of whom won first-round matches on Thursday afternoon. Here are the full Stars results from day one:

  • 140: Abigail Smith WON in the fall in the 2nd period against Sage Lehman (West Grand). Smith will take on Pueblo Central’s Gabby Dowling in Friday’s quarterfinals.
  • 190: Ezri Bonomo WON in the autumn in the 1st period against Gracie Patton (Bayfield). Bonomo will face Taylor Knox of Calahan in Friday’s quarter-finals.
  • 235: Mariah Gonzalez WON Alicia Rowe (Harrison) in the fall in the 2nd period. Gonzalez will take on Calahan’s Ciara Monger in Friday’s quarter-final matchup.
  • 115: Pearl Morris LOST to runner-up Amaya Hinojosa (Widefield) Fall 1st Period. Morris will face Arapahoe’s Esty Rivera in a repechage match.

FREEDOM GENERAL

This is the first season of the Eagles wrestling program and the women’s team has qualified a couple of wrestlers.

  • 145: Viviana Torrejon WON in tie-break (3-2) against Ava Witzel of Gunnison (Gunnison). Torrejon will take on Camryn Scott of Chatfield in Friday’s quarter-finals.
  • 235: Breanna Johansen LOST to Alejandra Alfaro (Denver East) in Round 1. Johansen will face Cheyenne Becker of Woodland Park.
