The 33-year-old Cheyenne faces up to 20 years in prison for a 2021 crash that killed a pedestrian.

The accident happened around 5:00 pm on December 19, 2021 at the 3600 E. Lincolnway block, close to Shari’s Cafe and Pies.

Police say Joe Sanders, 62, from Cheyenne, was trying to cross the road in an unlit area with no crosswalk when he bumped into an oncoming BMW.

The driver, Brandon Cabot Sibbitt, veered left but still hit Sanders, sending him into a jump from the right side of his BMW.

Sanders suffered serious injuries and died at the scene.

Sibbit, who was still sitting in his BMW when police contacted him, was checked for signs of disability but found nothing.

Police say Sibbit consented to a blood draw at the scene, which was taken without a search warrant.

On May 13, 2022, police received the results of Sibbit’s blood test, which showed that he had THC in his system at the time of the accident. There was no alcohol.

A warrant for Sibbitt’s arrest for aggravated vehicular murder was issued on January 30, 2023, and he was taken into custody on February 12, 2023.

He first appeared in Laramie County Circuit Court on February 13, 2023, and was released from jail after posting a $5,000 bail.

Sibbit’s preliminary hearing has been scheduled for February 22, 2023 at 1:30 pm.
