Cold front, gusty winds, rain, snow blow into the Las Vegas valley

LAS Vegas (KLAS) — Gusts of Wind, rain and snow caused disruptions while driving through the Las Vegas Valley on Tuesday.

A ground stop was in effect at the Las Vegas airport until 2:45 p.m. due to windy weather, according to the FAA. Arrivals were delayed an average of at least 15 minutes and departures were delayed at least 30 minutes earlier in the afternoon. One of the strongest wind gusts recorded so far was 53 mph at Harry Reed International Airport.

The strongest wind gust of 60 mph was recorded at North Las Vegas Airport, while gusts of 40 to 50 were recorded at Nellis Air Force Base, north of Henderson and north of Pahrump Valley.

Power outages were scattered throughout the valley and at one time affected more than 15,000 NVEnergy customers. At 13:00, 7,300 customers were still without electricity. By 4:15 pm, about 1,100 customers were left without electricity. The areas most affected by customers were along East Sahara Avenue and East Charleston Boulevard, as well as in northern Las Vegas.

Also around 11:18 a.m., an accident with an overturned semi-trailer was reported on northern I-15 on Lamb Boulevard, affecting traffic. The truck blocked the left lanes until noon.

A mixture of snow and rain is reported in the northwest valley of Las Vegas. Residents reached out to 8 News to report snowfall in the Centennial Hills and Summerlin areas.

A cold front is moving into the valley from the northwest and heading south/southeast. In some areas of the valley, wind speeds can reach 50 m/s.

A wind warning is in effect for southern Nevada until 10:00 a.m. Wednesday with strong cold winds from the north, according to the National Weather Service for Las Vegas. There is also about a 30% chance of rain and snow accompanying a gust of colder air pushed into the valley by an advancing cold front. Temperatures in the valley will drop in the afternoon and could drop into the 20s at night.

The RTC issued a winter storm warning for US 95 to Mount Charleston. It says drivers should expect delays.

Strong winds are reported along I-15 in San Bernadino County near Barstow. A high wind warning is in effect for San Bernadina County near Primm behind Barstow along I-15 and I-40 until 10:00 pm. Drivers on these freeways should exercise caution.
