AISD enrollment has declined over the years as some nearby counties are experiencing rapid growth.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — AISD enrollment hasn’t changed much over the past two years, but after nearly a decade of enrollment decline, the district hopes to focus on attracting more students.

“Enrollment has increased, but urban areas have seen a decline,” said Oscar Rodriguez, chief technology officer of AISD. “Hispanic and black students are getting smaller, while Asian and white student enrollment is growing.”

A chart shown during a recent board meeting shows that there were about 52,000 Hispanic students in 2011, but that number has dropped to just over 40,000.

In 2011, there were about 7,800 black students, and now there are just over 4,700.

With over 75,000 students, AISD is one of the largest school districts in the state, but there are issues that continue to weigh on growth.

“We have to get them (students) back,” AISD trustee Candice Hunter said. “We are surrounded by charters, there is the economy and affordable housing issues.”

How has enrollment in Central Texas school districts changed over the past decade?

Hunter said some people are moving to communities outside of Austin because it’s cheaper.

“We have families who go there because they still have affordable housing, but they are still close to Austin.”

Located just 30 minutes north of Austin, Hutto ISD is experiencing explosive growth.

“Really over the next 20 years it will be a four high school system,” said Henry Gideon, Assistant Superintendent of HISD Operations.

Gideon said the area is already planning expansion in the near future.

“In 2015 we had just over 5,700 students, and now there are 9,780.”

Gideo says projections show 13,000 students in 5 years, and while prices have gone up in the area, it’s still more affordable than Austin.

“The biggest factor east of Austin and northeast of Austin is accessibility,” Gideon said.

Austin ISD is committed to increasing enrollment in several ways. The District is working to improve the current enrollment process by making enrollment easier. They also created focus groups to learn from parents what a good school is and how families decide which school to send their children to.
