HOUSTON. On Monday, a man was taken into custody on charges of stealing an ambulance and police harassment in the Houston area.

Houston police said the man, who appeared to be in the midst of a medical crisis, first stole a car from a woman at Kroger’s gas station at West 11th Street and North Shepherd Drive. Police said the man pretended to help the woman before stealing her car.

The man then drove to Houston Fire Station 17, which is located east of downtown along Navigation Boulevard, and picked up an ambulance that had keys in the ignition, police said.

The man drove for about an hour while the police tried to find him.

HFD officials said the ambulance he stole had problems with the vehicle’s automatic location, making it difficult to locate.

“We couldn’t pinpoint exactly where he was,” HFD chief Rodney West said.

One driver said the man hit him while trying to get out of the way. Luckily, he wasn’t hurt and his car wasn’t badly damaged.

Eventually a police helicopter was able to find an ambulance on the West Loop near Richmond Avenue. The helicopter followed the ambulance until the police were able to catch up, HPD said.

The man drove to the Rice Village area, where police said they were able to use spike strips to slow him down. Police said that seconds after he hit the lanes, he got out of the ambulance and ran. The police quickly caught up with him and took him into custody.

Police said they would pursue allegations of carjacking and evasion. According to police, no one was hurt in this incident.
