Ames Tribune – the best students for the week from 23 to 29 January.

Last week, a total of 14 local girls qualified for this week’s Girls’ Wrestling Tournament at the Xtreme Arena in Coralville.

Four girls have won the regional championship in their regional competitions. Alexis Winkie of Ames (125 lbs) and Ashlyn Leslie of Nevada (110 lbs) and Mackenzie Ahrendts (190 lbs) took first place in Region 4, while Noel Bettger of Ballard won the Region 3 title at 130.

Ames’ boys’ wrestling team claimed two conference champions at the Iowa Alliance Conference held Saturday in Des Moines North. Ballard produced two champions and placed second at the Raccoon River Conference in Gilbert on Saturday.

The Ames Boys Basketball team tipped out Class 4A No. 8 Cedar Falls, 56-46, on Friday to extend their winning streak to nine games. The Little Cyclone girls defeated Des Moines Lincoln on January 24 at home, 55-43.

The No. 4 4A Ballard girls avenged their loss to No. 8 Carlisle (49–26) and also defeated Carroll in overtime, 51–42. On January 24, the Ballard Boys snapped a six-game losing streak with a 73–42 thrashing of Carlisle.

The 2A Boys #4 of Roland-Story swept Dyke New Hartford (78–43), Perry (79–25) and Seidel (73–45) to extend their winning streak to six games. The Scandinavian girls fell to 2A No. 1 DNH (79–21) and defeated Perry (59–37) and Seidel (56–27).

The Gilbert Boys won Thriller 72-70 in Nevada on January 23 and lost to Winterset on Friday. The Tiger Girls also defeated Nevada (48-22) and lost to Winterset (49-46).

Nevada basketball teams ended their three-game losing streak on Friday with wins in South Hamilton. The Cub boys won 60-56 and the girls ended the season against the Hawks with an impressive 56-40 win.

The Collins-Maxwell girls went 14-4 on the season with wins over North Tama (48-24) and GMG (62-44). The Spartans extended their winning streak to six games with wins over North Tam (61-29), Martensdale St. Marys (66-42) and GMG (57-46).

The guys from Colo-NESCO defeated GMG (64-39) and BCLUW (65-48), extending their winning streak to six games. The Royal Girls lost to GMG (54-30) and BCLUW (52-18).

Here are the top Ames Tribune individual performers of the week.

Alexis Winkie, Ames

Winky, ranked ninth in the girls’ wrestling rankings with number 125, fell three times during the Region 4 competition at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines. She beat Gilbert’s Cecilia Bowers in 18 seconds during the quarter-finals, Southeast Polk’s Aurora Brooks in 1:02 during the semi-finals, and Grinnell’s Ali Woods in 33 seconds during the championship match to set a 25-5 record.

Mackenzie Arends, Nevada

Ahrendts, who finished fifth in Women’s Wrestling at 190, was 3-0 in contention for the Regional Championship in Region 4. She beat Southeast Polk’s Grace Ellsbury in 1:17, Pella’s Elaine Babcock in 4:19 and Alea Johnson of Raccoon River-Northwest in 2:57 for a 33-2 record.

Ashlyn Leslie, Nevada

Leslie also won a regional title in the Region 4 girls’ wrestling event in Nevada.

Leslie went 3-0 at 110 after beating Pella’s Isabella Smith in 1:23, Baxter’s Jonel Glim in 21 seconds and Valley’s Avery Boer in 25 seconds. She is 32-9 years old, she is heading to the state.

Noel Bottger, Ballard

On Friday, Böttger presented Ballard with a Region 3 Champion at the Iowa Events Center.

The #7 wrestler at 130 lbs beat Williamsburg’s Shannon Finn in 5:09, Cedar Falls’ Anna Johnson in 5:01, and Dallas Center-Grimes’ Asia Jahangir in 3:54. She takes a 24-2 record at the state tournament.

Alex Harswick, Gilbert

Harswick placed second with a score of 145, the highest of the three Gilbert State qualifiers during the girls’ Region 4 competition on Friday.

Harswick went 2-1, beating West Des Moines Valley’s Danessa Valle at 1:42 to win 4-3 over Raccoon River-Northwest’s Addison Herrick before losing in the final to Perry’s Lauren Rogers. Harswick will post a 26-4 record.

Jabari Hinson, Ames

Hinson, who placed third at 126 pounds in class 3A, won the conference championship for the Ames wrestling team at the Iowa Alliance Conference on Saturday in North Des Moines.

Hinson improved his season record to 39-3 after defeating Marshalltown’s Ivan Pantoya by technical fall (16-0) in the semi-finals, and then sealed Fort Dodge’s Kane Butrick at 1:31 during the championship round.

Kyler Hall, Ames

On Saturday, Hall held another conference championship for the Little Cyclone wrestling team.

The senior Ames, who finished fourth with a score of 285, edged out Marshalltown’s Cunian Kuani in 2:47 and Fort Dodge’s Keaton Nichols in 5:42 to raise his season record to 33-3.

Brody Sampson, Ballard

Sampson won the Raccoon River Conference Championship for Ballard’s wrestling team at the RRC meeting in Gilbert on Saturday.

Sampson, who finished third in 2A with 182, went 41-2 this season after beating North Polk’s Carter Van Brocklin in 22 seconds and Bondurant-Farrar’s Trent Paxton in 3:12 to reach the final. where he knocked out 3A No. 12 Jack. Laughlin from Carlisle by a decision of the judges 7:0.

Gabe Christensen, Ballard

Christensen also won the RRC championship for Ballard at the age of 195.

Christensen, who finished 7th at 195th in 2A, edged out North Polk’s Nick Plautz at 2:50 in the semi-final and Carlisle’s 3A-No. 9 Jes Krsil at 1:34 during the final to win the title and improve his season record up to 37. -1.

Lucas Luet, Ames

Luet was a huge highlight for the Ames Boys Basketball team, which won Friday’s victory over Cedar Falls.

Luet scored 17 points and grabbed four rebounds and he held off the top scorer Tiger Dallas Bear with 38 points against the Iowa City Liberty and averaged 21.6 points for a total of 9 points.

Jalen Winter, Ames

Winter hit the winning basket on the buzzer and scored 15 points during Ames’ 49-47 victory over Des Moines Lincoln on January 24 at Ames.

He also hit four free throws with the clutch on the stretch and finished with 20 points in the victory over Cedar Falls.

Chloe Vierson, Collins-Maxwell

Wierson was the strength of the Collins-Maxwell women’s basketball team during its victories over North Tama and GMG.

Virson recorded a double-double in both games. She had 26 points and 14 rebounds against North Tama and 23 points and 13 boards against GMG.

Lily Bill, Ballard

Bill had productive performances for the Ballard girls’ basketball team during their wins over Carlisle and Carroll.

Bill had 11 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals against Carlisle and 16 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists in the win over Carroll.

Alex Ruba, Gilbert

Ruba had 20 points, seven rebounds and two steals for the Gilbert Boys in a 72-70 win in Nevada on January 23.

Ruba also had 16 points and six rebounds in an 81-55 loss to Winterset on Friday.

Luke Patton, Roland-Story

Patton averaged a double-double on the Roland-Story No. 4 Class 2A Boys Basketball Team during wins over Dyke New Hartford (78-43), Perry (79-25) and Seidel (73-45).

Patton averaged 10.3 points, 12.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks over three games to help the Northerners go 16-1.
