Scholars Can Get College Funding

Starting Wednesday, the Pine Bluff Community Foundation will be accepting Scholarship applications from high school students in Pine Bluff and Jefferson County. The deadline for applications is March 15th.

These Scholarships are for local students pursuing higher education in two or four year colleges or universities, vocational schools or technical training programs. According to a press release, $31,000 in scholarships were awarded last year.

Each scholarship has its own eligibility criteria. Some scholarships are for graduates of a particular high school or to attend a particular college. Others are based on extracurricular activities or intended college majors.

“Funding for these scholarships comes from families, businesses and individuals who want to support higher education and invest in our students,” said Lawrence Fykes, the foundation’s executive director. “These donors determine the size and eligibility criteria for the scholarships they create, and we manage the scholarship process on their behalf.”

Scholarships have been established for, but not limited to, students studying sports, history, library science, English, education, health and/or hospital management.

Students can visit www.arcf.org/scholarships to begin the application process. The local scholarship committee will review applications in March.

Examples of scholarships available include:

⦁ The Robert P. Atkinson Executive Scholarship is for students pursuing a master’s degree or higher with a focus on health administration.

⦁ Betty Abbott Scholarship and Pinchbuck Taylor Scholarship available at Southeast Arkansas College.

⦁ The William A. and Genevieve H. Strong Scholarship is available in the Mathematics Department of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
