Girl Scouts of Central Texas launch cookie sale; partner with Waco business for an innovative coffee program

WACO, TX (KWTX) — The Girl Scouts of Central Texas are once again selling cookies throughout the area, and the Waco Girl Scout Troop is partnering with local Dichotomy Coffee Shop to create a cookie-inspired latte.

Jalynn Merrell, Waco’s Girl Scout and sophomore at Robinson High School, and she’s no stranger to selling cookies. She’s been a Girl Scout since kindergarten.

Merrell said the organization helped make her who she is.

“It taught me a lot of decision-making skills,” she said. “It taught me a lot about business ethics and it really taught me what I want to be when I grow up giving interviews… It taught me that I want to do something with the camera.”

When Merrell worked as a Girl Scout, she participated in the Dichotomy program, which is a partner of the Waco coffee shop.

A partnership with Dichotomy turns Girl Scout cookies into a latte.

“We partnered with Girl Scouts to develop a drink that they thought tasted good and represented their cookies well,” said Dichotomy employee Maddy Ely.

Each year the lattes are inspired by a different Girl Scout. This year, Girl Scouts from Waco decided to model the drink after a peanut butter cookie sandwich called Peanut Butter Brew or PB Brew. Dichotomy provided a variety of cookie-matching syrups and created cookie milk by soaking Girl Scout cookies in milk.

“When we met with the Girl Scouts, we let them play around with all the ingredients, try different proportions of syrups, to see what they liked best,” Eli said.

After Dichotomy reopens in February after a renovation, they plan to start offering lattes in February. The Girl Scouts of Central Texas will receive a share of the profits.

Girl Scouts also benefit in many ways by selling cookies in shops throughout the region. Merrell said the profits will go to the scouts, as well as the Central Texas council, to provide travel, campus and learning opportunities.

The Girl Scouts of Central Texas will be ready to make some sales to the locals in the next few weeks. You can find a Girl Scout booth near you by entering the area code on this site.

One cookie that residents won’t find in local stalls is the new Raspberry Razzle cookie. It is only available online.

“We’re trying to teach our girls about online business ethics since most of us shop online today,” said Melissa Green, a program specialist in Central Texas. “You can also buy them from the local Girl Scouts and they will deliver them right to your home.”

Girl Scouts will sell Adventurefuls, Caramel deLites, Do-si-dos, lemonades, peanut butter patties, mints, toast and shamrocks at local stalls.
