Nevada area | U.S. Attorney’s Office Raised Over $3.9M in Civil and Criminal Cases in Fiscal Year 2022

LAS VEGAS — U.S. Attorney Jason M. Frearson announced today that Nevada County has raised more than $3.9 million in Criminal and civil lawsuits in fiscal year 2022. Of this amount, $3,355,703.29 was recovered in criminal cases and $593,501.29 in civil claims.

In addition, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada worked with other U.S. Attorney’s Offices and divisions of the Department of Justice to raise an additional $3,906.46 from criminal cases brought jointly by these offices.

“This total demonstrates our commitment to ensuring successful fundraising in civil and criminal cases,” U.S. Attorney Frierson said. “The dedicated Assistant U.S. Attorneys and support staff in our Financial Litigation Program and Asset Forfeiture Unit have worked tirelessly with partners in FY 2022 to collect and recover debts owed to the United States and crime victims.”

Highlights from the Nevada County collection for fiscal year 2022 include:

  • After pleading guilty to one count of filing and signing a false tax return, Graciela Alvarez agreed to pay restitution before sentencing. Alvarez paid $458,728.52 towards her restitution obligation to the IRS.
  • In 2002, Rhonda Hubbard pleaded guilty to one count of possession of counterfeit securities. In addition to five years of probation, Hubbard was ordered to pay $208,752.74 in restitution to Bank of America. In February 2022, Financial Litigation was informed that Hubbard was selling her house. The US Attorney’s Office managed to obtain funds from the sale of property. In March 2022, the remainder of Hubbard’s restitution obligations were paid in full.

U.S. attorneys’ offices, along with the department’s judicial divisions, are responsible for the collection and collection of civil and Criminal Debts Owed by the United States and criminal debts owed to victims of federal crimes. The law requires defendants to pay compensation to victims of certain federal crimes who suffer personal injury or financial loss. While restitution is paid to the victim, criminal fines and felonies assessments are paid to the department’s Crime Victims Fund, which distributes funds raised to federal and state victim compensation and victim assistance programs.

In addition, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada, working with partner agencies and divisions, raised $1,878,306 in asset forfeiture claims in fiscal 2022. for various law enforcement purposes.
