Houston ISD cancels all extracurricular activities due to bad weather in the region

As the Houston area prepares for Tuesday’s severe weather that could include heavy rain, severe storms and winds, and potential tornadoes, some local school districts are taking precautions to keep students, parents and staff safe. Houston ISD officials announced they are canceling all extracurricular activities on Twitter around 11 a.m. Tuesday, adding that they will make additional announcements as they continue to monitor adverse weather conditions.


The announcement follows tweet late on monday from district officials saying they will be watching for weather updates due to the current forecast. However, Houston ISD stopped shortening classes early. In anticipation of inclement weather, Hull-Daisetta ISD announced the layoff of students on Tuesday at 13:00. So far, no other county has announced school closures due to Tuesday’s early termination.

Around the same time as the HISD announcement, a tornado warning was issued for Katy, Brookshire and Simonton until 11:30 a.m. However, Katy ISD officials have not announced whether they will be terminating students early due to the warning. A tornado warning indicating imminent tornado formation was also issued for the Tomball, Texas area, including Corville.


According to KHOU, Klein and Waller’s ISD students were ordered to take cover inside neighborhood buildings around 11:45 a.m.


Katy ISD also issued a notice that she is sheltering in place in light of the severe weather warnings in the area. These adjustments may affect student lunch schedules throughout the district.


The most severe of the severe thunderstorms are expected to hit the Houston area between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm as a low pressure area followed by a strong cold front passes through southeast Texas. National Weather Service (NWS). The storms are expected to produce strong damaging winds gusting up to 30 to 50 mph, one to three inches of heavy rain, potential major hail and minor flooding. The NWS also issued a tornado watch for Harris County and surrounding areas, which expires Tuesday at 6:00 pm.
