Rep. Adam Smith is calling on president-elect Donald Trump to remove Lt. Michael Flynn over history of promoting conspiracy theories.
Smith, the ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee, slammed Flynn for engaging in the reckless public promotion of conspiracy theories that have no basis in fact.
Smith said in a statement: “I have grave concerns about the judgment of Lt. General Michael Flynn. He has regularly engaged in the reckless public promotion of conspiracy theories that have no basis in fact, with disregard for the risks that giving credence to those theories could pose to the public. The National Security Adviser is responsible for filtering and assessing crucial information pertaining to the national defense. Someone who is so oblivious to the facts, or intentionally ignorant of them, should not be entrusted with policy decisions that affect the safety of the American people.”
Flynn’s Twitter feed is filled with fake news and controversial comments about Muslims. He has no place in any administration. Smith’s statement comes after Flynn’s son tweeted about the conspiracy theory involving Comet Ping Pong restaurant. Edgar Maddison Welch was arrested after going to the restaurant to “self-investigate” the conspiracy theory about sex trafficking at the establishment. A Trump spokesman says that Flynn’s son is no longer a part of the transition team.
