All Saints Cathedral to unveil new Provost as Wainaina takes up advisor role at Lambeth Palace, UK

NAIROBI. Kenya Jun 18 – Anglican Church of Kenya Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit is expected to unveil the All Saints’ Cathedral incoming Provost who will be taking over from the Very Rev. Dr. Sammy Wainaina whose term ended recently.

ACK Communication Officer Evena Wafula says the unveiling will take place during Sunday’s 11:30 am service.

“The Cathedral has played a significant role in shaping the life of this country and as such, this succession is an important moment for the entire Anglican community across the country,” read a statement.

Wainaina became the All Saints Cathedral Provost in December 2013 and has held the position ever since.

He has served in the ACK for the past 25 years, where he has held positions such as Vicar, Archdeacon, and Assistant Provost during his theological career.

Provost Wainaina was ordained in 1996 in Nakuru Diocese of Kenya where he grew up. He is married to Beatrice, and they have 3 children.

The outspoken Provost will be taking up the role of Adviser on Anglican Communion Affairs in London, United Kingdom

He will be expected to support the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby in all matters relating to his Anglican Communion responsibilities.

According to a previous announcement, Welby explained that an adviser will be required to lead the Anglican Communion team at Lambeth, UK, and work collaboratively with colleagues holding related portfolios, especially at the Anglican Communion Office.

As a strategic operator, the adviser is required to demonstrate an ability to appreciate the cultures and traditions of churches in the Anglican Communion, and a capacity to bridge cultures, especially in Africa but also more widely.

“In addition, they are required to have an aptitude for developing constructive relationships with other organisations and influential individuals, good political judgment, first-hand experience of interaction with other major faiths, and be able to demonstrate a capacity to relate to those caught up in violent conflict,” read the communication issued in March 2023.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, described Provost Sammy as a dedicated and faithful priest for many years, and a creative and evangelistic Provost of All Saints Cathedral in Kenya.

“I’m grateful that he will be joining the diverse team at Lambeth Palace, supporting us in our ministry to and with the global Anglican Communion. His ministry in parish and cathedral life, combined with his experience across different Anglican traditions, will be a valuable contribution to the senior team at Lambeth,” Archbishop Welby said in a statement posted on his website.
