COVID-19: Kenya records 323 new cases, 342 recoveries; positivity rate now at 5.8pc

The total of confirmed, positive COVID-19 cases in the country has hit 248,392 following a report of 323 new infections on Saturday, from a sample size of 5,606,  tested in the last 24 hours. 

In a statement on Saturday, the Ministry of Health said the new infections posted a positivity rate of 5.8 percent- the lowest in as many days- and pushes the total of samples tested so far to 2,533,467. 

“From the cases 317 are Kenyans while 6 are foreigners. 167 females while 156 are males,” the statement reads. 

“The youngest is a two-month old baby while the oldest is 104 years ,” 

Meanwhile, Nandi leads with the most new infections, recording 71 in the last one day. Nairobi, Nakuru and Nyeri follow, with 41,30 and 22 new cases respectively. 

In the rest of the country, the new infections are distributed as follows: Makueni 14, Kajiado 13, Kiambu 12, Kisii 11, Mombasa 11, Embu 8, Siaya 8, Murang’a 7, Garissa 6, Bomet 5, Kirinyaga 5, Laikipia 5, Machakos 5, Kakamega 5, Uasin Gishu 5, Marsabit 4, Isiolo 4, Bungoma 4, Nyandarua 4, Kitui 4, Busia 4, Meru 3, Samburu 2, Elgeyo Marakwet 2, West Pokot 2, Kwale 2, Baringo 1, Homa Bay 1, Turkana 1 and Kericho 1.

A total of 1,220 patients are currently admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 2,694 are under the Home-Based Isolation and Care program.

 “92 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 52 of whom are on ventilatory support and 40 on supplemental oxygen. No patient is under observation,” the Ministry added. 

“Another 375 patients are separately on supplemental oxygen with 361 of them in general wards and 14 in High Dependency Units (HDU),” 

The total of recoveries, the Ministry said, hit 239,730 after 432 new recoveries in the last one day. 

“387 recoveries were from the Home-Based Isolation and Care program while 45 are from various health facilities countrywide,” the statement reads. 

At the same time, Kenya recorded 14 new deaths to hit a death toll of 5,096; two in the last one day and 12 late reports made after facility record audits in  March, April, July and September 2021 

Vaccination

Some 3,600,187 vaccine doses had been administered in the country as of September 24. 

According to data from the Health Ministry, total first doses were 2,713,427 while second doses were 886,760. 

“The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose was at 32.7%.”  the Heath Ministry said “Proportion of adults fully vaccinated was 3.3%.”
