Loyiso Madinga as Fred

We are passionate about telling African stories, we believe stories hold true power as it can influence narratives, shape people and society.

African stories told by Africans are important as it provides the opportunity for us to export our stories in a way that is true, genuine and reflects the true Africa.

Thus, we got this exclusive interview from the producers, directors and part of the crew working on Netflix Africa’s first script-to-screen Original series, Queen Sono.

The six-part series is being produced by Diprente, the Johannesburg-based production company behind Catching Feelings and International Emmy nominated Late Nite News with Loyiso Gola.

Showrunner and Director Kagiso Lediga (named as one of Fast Company’s Most Creative People 2019) is joined by Director Tebogo Malope (Cannes Lions and SAFTA award winner), with both directing three episodes each. The team is led by Executive Producer Tamsin Andersson.

Director Tebogo Malope  said when he first read the script it felt like a narrative planted in contemporary Africa in the real world and it has been both an exciting and overwhelming project and he was more than happy to be part of it.

We asked; “How would you describe an African James bond?” He had this to say,

I think once we reveal our own African sleek spy, no one will compare them to the other guy, because they will be so fresh, unique and authentic.

The show is an action-packed series that follows Queen Sono, a highly trained top spy in a South African agency whose purpose is to better the lives of African citizens.

While taking on her most dangerous mission yet, she must also face changing relationships in her personal life. We also chatted with Queen Sono’s male stylist Lehasa Molloyi and he expressed his gratitude on being part of the movie that’s about to make history as one of the South African Netflix Original.

We were given the chance to create our own super hero, it is special because if done right, it will open the door for so much more.

We asked the show’s hair and makeup artist, Sihle Dladla how the show’s image has been carefully crafted for a local and global audience;

Africa has never been represented well in terms of beauty, we never see beauty within our own hair that is why i kept the lead in natural hair, i wanted to show that we can still look pretty wearing our natural crown and we need to present that to the world.
