Canada Needs To Spend More At DND

The Snowbird tragedy this past weekend underscores the reality that our governments have addressed the financial needs of Canada’s Armed Forces with token attention and often, to use the expression, when the ship was sinking. Canada bought used submarines that were not a bargain, especially when you cost in all the upgrades/repairs that have been required. Consider all the politically oriented delays associated with replacing the aging fleet of fighter jets, helicopters, ships etc. And now, we have Snowbird jets that are 57-years-old. And then, there’s those planes that are used for government officials, some of which are beyond cost-effective upgrades.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is currently seeking one of the rotating seats on the U.N. Security Council. When the permanent council members have the most influence, Canada’s participation is primarily one of optics for Canadians and perhaps to satisfy Trudeau’s personal agenda.

Whether it is the U.N. Security Council or membership in the G8 and G20, Canada’s role seems inconsequential as far as the big decision-makers are concerned. Considering the role of the Canadian Armed Forces in these multi-national efforts shouldn’t we expect they have dependable assets? Although spending more at DND is seldom a big vote getter, Canada’s presence on the international stage should require more than minimal funding for the Armed Forces.

It is high time for the government to set aside self-serving political considerations and do what is needed to fund our Armed Forces to a level that ensures it is not an expenditure of last resort. And what better time than now. With the Trudeau government now spending multi-billions in several areas, why not spend several billion dollars on upgrading the aging fleets in all areas of military assets. It would not only boost economic activity in Canada but help restore the confidence that Canadians need to have in knowing our Armed Services have regular asset upgrades.
