This is an installment of an ongoing series examining how true small government voices in Congress are being drowned out in the era of Donald Trump.
Rep. Thomas Massie (Ky.) has gained a great deal of support from liberty-loving Republicans nationwide. That’s why his recent endorsement of GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump had some members of the liberty movement scratching their heads.
But for Massie, who supported fellow Kentucky Rep. Rand Paul in the GOP primaries, the Trump endorsement is more about disrupting the Republican establishment than celebrating the nominee’s fitness for the presidency.
With Trump, the lawmaker said in a recent interview, “I think you’re more likely to get change.”
He added: “I don’t know if it’s gonna be a good change, but you gotta break eggs to make an omelette.”
Last month, Massie offered a few more specific reasons for supporting Trump in an interview with Washington Examiner:
Well, he’s better than 90 percent of the congressmen I serve with. … I’m serious.
No. 1, he’s not owned. Nobody owns him. That rules out a lot of them.
No. 2, he’s got real business experience. If I see another candidate that runs as a small businessman that was a lawyer or a doctor that had, like, a personal practice, I’m gonna scream. Because they never had a board of directors, they never had a balance sheet, they never had marketing, they never had product development, I mean they never had a real business, per se.
He’s done that, mutiple times.
Massie contends that other members of his party are likely fans of Hillary Clinton.
“I think some of these guys would secretly in their hearts rather have Hillary win and they’ll take a crack at it in 2020 than to have Donald Trump win and upset their apple cart and their agenda that they’ve laid out for this country,” he said.
