A new poll out Tuesday shows that the Trump administration and the GOP-controlled Congress could win major confidence points with Americans on both sides of the political divide if Washington delivers on a Reform package to simplify the tax code and provide cuts for the middle class.

According to the polling data out from the American Action Network, 73 percent of Americans believe comprehensive Tax Reform legislation should be a major priority for Congress.

The biggest issues respondents want handled via a reform package are eliminating loopholes (75 percent) simplifying the tax code (72 percent). Just 19 percent of respondents to the poll said they believe the current tax code is “fair to individuals” and only 22 percent said it “keeps companies in America.” More than half of respondents (58 percent) said Congress should lower the corporate tax rate.

But Lowering Corporate Taxes isn’t the most important priority for most voters according to the poll. More Americans said Congress needs to get to work on a middle class tax cut than the combined number who favor simplification, eliminating loopholes and lowering corporate taxes.

“The more Americans hear about tax reform, the more they want Congress to prioritize and pass meaningful pro-growth tax reform,” Corry Bliss, executive director of American Action Network, said. “Poll after poll shows that a strong majority of Americans widely support fixing our broken tax system and lowering tax rates for working families.”

With the latest attempt to rework Obamacare appearing dead in the water, lawmakers are poised to move on to tax reform with the release of a comprehensive proposal this week.

Trump reportedly hyped the plan in a recent meeting with lawmakers, saying: “We will cut taxes tremendously for the middle class. Not just a little bit but tremendously.”
