Odisha sets March deadline for road repairs

To ensure Road safety and reduce road mishaps, Odisha government has set a deadline to correct faulty road designs and repair roads that are in bad shape in several parts of the State.

The state government has given three months deadline till March to works department and National Highways Authority of India to correct road defects and faulty designs.

Aditya Padhi, Chief Secretary of Odisha took a review on the status of roads in the state to reduce road accidents with transport and police officials and these steps are initiated by the state government.

“Apart from instructions to Works and NHAI officials, district collectors have been asked to utilize services of experts to conduct road safety audits and chalk out long-term measures to check accidents”, said Madhusudan Padhi, Transport Commissioner after the high-level meeting. He also said that the target is to reduce death due to road accidents to 10% in 2018 compared to last year.

Government has plans to launch intensive traffic awareness campaign across the State. As per plans, people residing on both sides of various under construction projects including four-laning roads will be informed about ongoing construction activities.

A special campaign will also be undertaken to create awareness among drivers and supporting staff of trucks and buses, informed Transport Commissioner, Madhusudan Padhi.

The government has planned to constitute a State Management Group comprising heads of various departments, who will be entrusted with the job of creating awareness.

It was also decided that the traffic volunteer system will be implemented in four cities like Rourkela, Berhampur, Sambalpur and Balasore. Student volunteers will be involved roped in the system which will be extended to other cities in phased manner.

The State road agencies have also been directed to share their design on connecting approach road with NH and such designs will be made as per the direction of NH authorities.
