The Second Volume of the ECMI student textbook broadens the traditional scope of minority studies

The ECMI’s first textbook has been used since 2013 as the core literature when teaching MA courses on Minority Issues, particularly the annual course at the Europa University Flensburg. Following on from this success, the second volume was released last month (March 2019) and provides 8 new chapters concerning minority issues. Aimed at reflecting the changing political landscape of 21st century Europe, Minority Issues in Europe: New Ideas and Approaches (Volume 2) builds on the field of traditional minority studies covered in Volume 1 to add fresh perspectives and analysis.

Co-edited by ECMI Director Prof. Dr. Tove Malloy and Junior Research Associate Caitlin Boulter, Minority Issues in Europe: New Ideas and Approaches features the work of a mix of internal ECMI researchers as well as external scholars. In this book, the field of minority studies is expanded to incorporate different academic sub-disciplines such as sociology of education, media studies and political philosophy. Topics include minority empowerment, news media discourse, Roma ethnicities, right-wing populism, and the nexus of old and new minorities.

The ECMI intends this to be a complementary follow-up to the first volume of the textbook, and looks forward to using it in its university teaching as well as seeing it used more broadly in the teaching of minority studies in Europe and beyond.

Minority Issues in Europe: New Ideas and Approaches (Vol. 2) is available now, published by Frank & Timme. It can be purchased directly online
