On 08 May 2017 the ECMI is organizing the 8th Minority Roundtable in the Danish-German border region.

What does it mean to be a ‘true’ German or a ‘true’ Dane? Does one have to be born in the country of citizenship? Does one have to speak the national language? Can one associate two languages with one national identity? Is there a hierarchy between national and Minority languages? What does ‘we’ mean? Must ‘we’ share the same customs and traditions? Is mastering the national language necessary for belonging? When is one a member of a national ‘group’? These are some of the questions, we ask at the ECMI’s 8th Minority Roundtable on 8 May 2017.

The Minority Roundtable will focus on language and identity in a broad sense. The two concepts and their connection have become topics in the Danish-German border region lately.

We invite representatives of the national minorities and members of academia in the border region to join us for a discussion of how to understand this debate and its many aspects.

As a special guest, the Mayor of Flensburg City Ms. Simone Lange will join the 8th Minority Roundtable. The Roundtable will feature two short debate introductions delivered by Prof. Dr. Nils Langer and Prof. Dr. Elin Fredsted from Europa-Universität Flensburg. The discussions will be moderated by the ECMI Chairman Dr. Jørgen Kühl.
