A Wasted Life - By Inmate Sterling Jarnagin

I would be a wealthy man growing up in south Texas along the Texas Mexico border, one of the poorest areas of the United States, and in my opinion one of the most crime riddled. Almost all my friends growing up were from families who were members of the Gulf Drug Cartel, so we were exposed to drug trafficking and violence from a young age, and essentially groomed to a life of crime. All our influences and the success I saw was from this underworld society, and I grew up poor. Through crime, I helped feed and clothe my siblings. The food we ate to the clothing and shoes was a product of my crimes. A kids influences and social economic environment are definitely a recipe for success or failure. Perhaps that's why all who knew thought I'd be dead at a young age due to a violent death. My biological birth mother spent almost everyday of her life in a bar either working or sat on a bar stool. I rarely saw her. My sister, Tamzie, was the mother figure. She washed the clothes, cooked the food - that more often than not was stolen from stores or bought with money from criminal activity. This difficult situation bonded me and my siblings. Tamzie, David, and me and Brandie. But by the time I was 14, my sister, Tamzie, had, had enough and left home at 17. Brandie was taken by her father and his family and was living in Illinois. David and I, was left to weather the storm. Despite all the craziness, me and David went to school and played football, which is really the only reason I went to school. I have always enjoyed sports. I played them all; football, baseball and basketball. I boxed at the Boys Club and trained in martial arts.
