Chairman, Obi Local Government Council of Nasarawa state, Mohammed Eyigye Iyamoga, has been impeached by the Legislative chamber of the council on Monday, for breach of the constitution and other alleged offences.

One of the councilors, Matthew Simon Odunaga who confirmed this, claimed that they were attacked by fierce looking thugs after the impeachment and left with no option than to flee for their lives to the state Capital, Lafia.

“After we sat and impeached the chairman, Mohammed Iyamoga, thugs were mobilized to beat and smash our cars, we left our cars and fled Obi to Lafia,” he said.

Mr Odunaga, who hails from the same Ward with the impeached chairman said that the chairman has not been consistently transparent with the local government expenditures.

” We have many complaints of alleged breach of the constitution by the suspended chairman, Iyamoga,” he disclosed.

” The constitution provides that he has to consult the legislature for any expenditure above N500,000 ( Half million naira ) but he has not. He did not present the budget for 2020 and the year is ending, he hide the mace whenever we were about to sit among many allegations, he added.

According to Odunaga, 8 out of 10 councillors of the Local government council voted and endorsed the impeachment.

All efforts to reach the embattled chairman were futile as his phone was not connecting.

As at the time of writing this report, dozens police and NSCDC personnel have been stationed at the local government secretariat to prevent breakdown of law and order.
