Revel mopeds are approved to hit the streets

Shared electric vehicle company Revel, based in New York City, today announced the launch of its all-electric mopeds in Miami. Revel will operate a fleet of 750 vehicles, which are currently being placed on local streets. The mopeds will be available to rent for licensed drivers over the age of 21 who pass an initial safe driving record check.

After responding to a request for proposals from the Miami Parking Authority (MPA), Revel was chosen out of multiple candidates to be Miami’s sole provider of shared electric mopeds, and the MPA board unanimously approved the company’s agreement with the MPA.

“As a city, we continue to explore safe and reliable transportation solutions, and Revel fits that bill,” said Miami Mayor Francis Suarez. “Revel and the Miami Parking Authority have a strong relationship, and will work together to ensure that this cost-effective transportation option meets our residents’ needs and our city’s standards.”

“The addition of electric mopeds, as a new mode of transportation in Miami, is another quantum leap forward in support of enhanced mobility in our City,” said Art Noriega, Chief Executive Officer of the Miami Parking Authority. “Once again, the Miami Parking Authority prides itself in leading innovative approaches that enhance mobility and the way our customers move and park in Miami.”

“Miami is one of the first cities that came to mind when we started Revel,” said Frank Reig, CEO and co-founder. “The city’s incredible growth has spurred an interest in new modes of transportation, and we’re proud to build on Miami’s existing moped culture by introducing the city’s first moped sharing service.”

As part of its commitment to the City of Miami, they will create over 30 new jobs with benefits, and will translate its app into Spanish and Creole. They will also operate an Access program, allowing riders who are eligible for or actively participating in any local, state, or federal assistance programs to receive a 40 percent discount on rides. Active military and veterans will also be eligible to receive a 20 percent discount on  rides.

Revel takes extensive measures to ensure its riders are safe and responsible on the road. Prior to riding, users must upload their drivers’ license, allowing confirmation that they are 21 or older and do not have a history of reckless driving. Users must also upload a selfie to ensure that the drivers’ license uploaded is theirs. To date, approximately one out of every 12 applicants does not make it past this screening.

Once users are approved, they can find, reserve, and unlock the moped of their choice via the mobile app. Each moped comes with two U.S. Department of Transportation-certified helmets and is built to carry up to two riders. Like every other motor vehicle on the road in Miami, Revels are registered with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. They are limited to local streets and are capped at a speed of 30 miles per hour. Rides cost $1 per person to start, followed by $0.29 per minute to ride.

Revel will offer free lessons seven days a week for Miamians interested in riding or safety instruction. Miami riders will be covered by third-party liability insurance and are required to abide by all local traffic and parking laws.
