Donald Trump Jr. Compares Democrats to Nazis.

Donald Trump Jr. claims that the platform of the 1930s Nazi party closely aligns with the Democratic platform today. At the premiere of Dinesh D’Sousa’s latest film fiction “Death of a Nation” he made the claim:

“You see the Nazi platform from the early 1930s . . . and you look at it compared to the DNC platform of today, you’re saying, ‘Man, those things are awfully similar.”

Is he right? Let’s have a look. The ‘Platform of the National-Socialist German Workers’ Party’ of 1933 starts off with the platitude:  “The Program of the German Workers’ Party is a program for our time”. It then outlines the 25 planks that comprise the program. Let’s look at a few. (They may have been edited for length, but the meaning remains clear.) I have added comments.

1: “We Demand the uniting of all Germans within one Greater Germany”.

Which sounds a lot like ‘Make Germany Great Again’.

4: “Only persons of German blood can be Nationals, regardless of religious affiliation. No Jew can therefore be a German National.”

White supremacy.

7. “We demand that the State make it its duty to provide opportunities of employment first of all for its own Citizens. If it is not possible to maintain the entire population of the State, then foreign nationals (non-Citizens) are to be expelled from the Reich.”

Germany for Germans

8. “Any further immigration of non-Germans is to be prevented. We demand that all non-Germans who entered Germany after August 2, 1914, be forced to leave the Reich without delay.”

Anti-immigration.

22. “We demand the abolition of hireling troops and the creation of a national army.”

Pro-military.

23. “We demand laws to fight against deliberate political lies and their dissemination by the press.”

No Fake News.

That should make any conservative happy.

On the other hand, the Nazi platform demanded:

11. “The abolition of all income obtained without labor or effort.”

No trust fund babies.

12. “the total confiscation of all war profits.”

No profiteering.

13. “the nationalization of all enterprises (already) converted into corporations (trusts).”

Socialism.

14. “profit-sharing in large enterprises.”

Reward workers for their labor.

15. “large-scale development of old-age pension schemes.”

Safety net

16. “the creation and maintenance of a sound middle class.”

Everyone likes that one.

17. “Abolition of ground rent and prevention of all speculation in land.”

No land barons.

18. “Persons committing base crimes against the People, usurers, profiteers, etc., are to be punished by death without regard to religion or race.”

Don’t be a payday lender. Or a credit card company charging obscene interest.

21. “The State must raise the level of national health by means of mother-and-child care.”

Socialized medicine.

There’s a lot for liberals to like in that.

However, let’s remember it’s not what you say you will do. It’s what you actually do. After all, Trump Promised more inclusive, cheaper and better healthcare. He promised better trade deals. He promised to fix the VA. He promised a Mexican-paid-for border wall. He promised to tax the rich. And he promised ‘America First’.

The Nazis may have promised much that reflects both Republican and Democratic values. But it was his white nationalism, Germany first, muffle the press along with his anti-semitic, homophobic, anti-union, anti-socialism policies that were his lasting legacies.

And let’s remember it was the Republicans who thought we should stay out of WWII or maybe even fight on the German side.
