Malaria vaccines shipped to Africa, Pune based SII flagged off consignment

In a major development, the Pune based Serum Institute of India (SII) dispatched the first consignment of malaria vaccines to Africa. US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti flagged off the consignment along with Adar Poonawalla, who is CEO and owner of SII.

“I am thrilled to witness firsthand the groundbreaking work towards a malaria vaccine at Serum Institute of India and to witness the first shipment to be crated and bound for malaria endemic countries. This collaboration between the U.S. and India exemplifies our commitment to addressing global health challenges. Together, we are one step closer to a malaria free world”, envoy Eric Garcetti said.

Named R21/Matrix-M, the malaria vaccine has been developed in collaboration with the University of Oxford and the US-based biotechnology firm Novavax’s Matrix-M adjuvant (a medicine that increases or modifies the activity of other ingredients in a medicine, especially vaccines). It is learnt that this is second malaria vaccine to be authorized by the World Health Organization for use in children in malaria-endemic regions.

The shipment was headed for Central African Republic (CAR) and other African countries such as South Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo.
