Commencement of Taxpayer Identification in Bujumbura City Starting with Mukaza Commune

The city of Bujumbura has officially begun the process of identifying all taxable property owners, including land parcels and businesses, with the Mukaza Commune taking the lead in this initiative. This important announcement was made through a press release issued by the Ministry of Interior, Community Development, and Public Safety in the Republic of Burundi.

The Mayor's Office in Bujumbura has revealed that this taxpayer Identification drive will be executed by city agents donned in uniform and equipped with official mission orders. This operation, encompassing all taxable assets, will commence on Monday, October 30, 2023.

For taxpayers who are already registered, they are required to present evidence of payment for taxes, fees, or annual dues for the year 2023. New taxpayers must provide specific documents for identification, depending on their classification:

  • For individuals, a copy of their national identity card and a passport-sized photo is mandatory.
  • For representatives of estates, an act of notoriety must be presented.
  • Businesses, whether commercial, artisanal, industrial, or professional, should provide copies of their business registry, articles of incorporation, and their National Identification Number (NIF).
  • Public commercial companies must include copies of the decree that established their creation and their NIF.
  • Associations must furnish a copy of the accreditation ordinance.
  • Tenants of municipal buildings and public spaces are required to submit a copy of the agreement binding them to the Bujumbura City authority.

The city administration has emphasized that anyone providing false information will face legal consequences as dictated by the law.

The Mayor of Bujumbura, Jimmy Hatungimana, encourages widespread dissemination of this announcement and urges all residents and property owners to comply with the identification process. The endeavor is a crucial step in ensuring transparency and fairness in the tax collection system within the city.

For any inquiries or further information regarding the required documentation for identification, individuals are advised to refer to the official communication released on October 27, 2023.
