In recognition for their dedicated service in promoting peace in the Central African Republic (CAR), Burundian UN peacekeepers, known as the Blue Helmets, were awarded United Nations medals on October 19, 2023. These brave individuals have been on a mission since November 28, 2022, under the banner of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).
The ceremony, which took place in Sibut, CAR, was graced by Lieutenant General Humphrey Nyone, the Force Commander of MINUSCA, who commended the professionalism exhibited by the Burundian troops in executing their mission.
Meanwhile, Mamadou Dian Balde, the Regional Director of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for the East African region, the Horn of Africa, and the Great Lakes, embarked on a three-day working visit to Burundi. At the international airport named after Melchior Ndadaye, Balde expressed his intention to meet with refugees from neighboring countries and Burundian authorities. He aimed to express gratitude for opening doors to those seeking protection and solutions in Burundi.
Hon. Sabushimike Imelde, the Minister of the Ministry responsible for National Solidarity, Burundi joined countries around the world in celebrating the 2023 edition of the International Day of the Girl. This special day was observed at the Anglican Diocese grounds in Buye, located in the Mwumba commune within the Ngozi Province.
Traditionally celebrated on October 11th every year, this event in Burundi carried the theme, "Encouraging Girls to Embrace Scientific and Technological Fields and Careers." The festivities highlighted the significance of girls pursuing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines, emphasizing the role they play in shaping the future.
