Chicago Begins Evicting Migrants from Shelters Amid Policy Changes

Chicago officials announced the eviction of nearly three dozen Migrants from city-run shelters this weekend, marking the enforcement of Mayor Brandon Johnson’s 60-day limit policy. However, modifications to the plan have reduced the number of evictions from the initially estimated 5,600 to approximately 3,800, with around 4,500 migrants eligible for extensions until the end of May.

Exemptions to the eviction policy now include parents of Chicago Public Schools students, pregnant individuals, those with illnesses or mental health issues, and those under quarantine. The ongoing influx of migrants bused by Texas Governor Greg Abbott without notice has complicated the city’s management of the crisis, according to city officials.

An outbreak of measles in one of the city’s largest shelters prompted reconsideration of the eviction timeline. While all migrants in city-run shelters are now required to be vaccinated, those in the affected Pilsen shelter will be exempt from eviction.

Despite the modifications, over 2,000 migrants will face eviction by the end of April. The eviction process will be handled by case managers with a focus on education and grace, without involvement from law enforcement.

Johnson’s handling of the crisis has drawn criticism, with some claiming it diverted resources from other initiatives. However, city officials emphasize the unprecedented nature of the situation and the lack of federal assistance in managing it.

The city remains fluid in its response as long as new migrants continue to arrive from the southern border. With no established precedent, officials navigate uncharted territory in addressing the evolving crisis.
