Following the untimely death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash, Mohammad Mokhber has been appointed as Iran's interim president. His appointment marks a significant moment in Iran’s political landscape. With a robust background in managing large-scale economic and charitable institutions, Mokhber brings a wealth of experience to his new role.

Early Life and Education

Mohammad Mokhber was born in Dezful, located in the southwestern province of Khuzestan. He pursued higher education in electrical engineering and later earned a PhD in international law. His academic credentials laid a solid foundation for his career in both the public and private sectors.

Career Milestones

Leadership at Setad

One of Mokhber's most prominent roles was leading the Organisation for the Execution of Imam Khomeini’s Order (Setad). For 14 years, he was at the helm of this multibillion-dollar conglomerate, which is under the direct control of the Iranian supreme leader. Setad, initially established to manage properties left behind after the revolution, has grown into a vast economic empire with significant influence in various sectors.

During his tenure, Mokhber focused on expanding Setad’s charitable activities and its economic ventures. His leadership was particularly noted during the COVID-19 pandemic when Setad developed COVIran Barekat, Iran’s main coronavirus vaccine, demonstrating his ability to manage large-scale health crises.

First Vice President

In August 2021, Mokhber was appointed as the first vice president by President Ebrahim Raisi. As the seventh person to hold this position since its establishment in 1989, Mokhber was tasked with overseeing various governmental development projects across Iran. His role included significant travel, both domestically and internationally, often leading delegations to foster diplomatic and economic ties.

Sanctions and Controversies

Mokhber’s career has not been without controversy. In 2010, he was sanctioned by the European Union for his alleged involvement in Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs. Although he was later removed from the EU's sanctions list, the United States sanctioned him and Setad in 2021, accusing them of human rights violations and other infractions. Despite these challenges, Mokhber has maintained a strong position within Iran’s political and economic spheres.

Interim Presidency

Following Raisi's death, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei approved Mokhber’s accession to the role of interim president. This decision underscores Mokhber's close ties to the supreme leader’s office and his established rapport with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Immediate Responsibilities

As interim president, Mokhber has pledged to follow the path set by Raisi, ensuring that governmental duties continue without disruption. He held an extraordinary meeting with judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei and parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf to set the stage for a new presidential election, which must occur within 50 days according to the constitution. Mokhber’s immediate focus is on maintaining stability and continuity in governance during this transitional period.

Conclusion

Mohammad Mokhber's appointment as Iran’s interim president places a seasoned and influential figure at the forefront of the nation’s leadership. His extensive background in managing Setad and serving as first vice president equips him with the experience needed to navigate Iran through this challenging time. As Iran prepares for a new presidential election, Mokhber's leadership will be crucial in ensuring a smooth and stable transition.
