Tensions between China and Philippines Escalate over Using Water Cannons

In a recent incident on Saturday, the Philippine Coast Guard encountered trouble while escorting charter boats carrying essential supplies for Filipino military personnel stationed at Second Thomas Shoal in the Spratly Islands.

The region is at the center of a longstanding territorial dispute as Beijing claims nearly all of the South China Sea, a crucial waterway for trillions of dollars in trade annually.

The 2016 international court ruling that rejected China's claims has been ignored by Beijing.

The Recent Incident: Violation of International Law by China

The Philippines' military and coast guard have accused the China Coast Guard of violating international law by blocking and using water cannons against the resupply mission, leading to the prevention of one charter boat from reaching the shoal.

China defended its actions, claiming that the Philippine boats had illegally entered its waters.

Second Thomas Shoal is located approximately 200 kilometers from the Philippine island of Palawan and over 1,000 kilometers from China's nearest major landmass, Hainan island.

The Chinese Coast Guard and navy have been known to frequently block or shadow Philippine ships patrolling the disputed waters.

This recent incident marks the first time since November 2021 that the Chinese coast guard used water cannons against a Philippine resupply mission to Second Thomas Shoal.

The longstanding maritime disputes between Manila and Beijing have been complicated by the former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte's reluctance to criticize China during his tenure as he sought closer ties with the powerful neighbor for investment opportunities.

International Attention and Condemnation

The situation has drawn international attention and condemnation. The US State Department, Britain, Australia, Canada, and the European Union have all criticized Beijing's actions, stating that they directly threaten regional peace and stability.

The Stance of Philippine Leader

Since succeeding Duterte, the current Philippine leader, Marcos, has taken a more assertive stance in defending the country's maritime rights and strengthening defense ties with the United States, the Philippines' former colonial ruler and long-time ally.

Summoning Chinese Ambassador

In response to the recent incident, the Philippine government summoned the Chinese Ambassador to convey a diplomatic protest.

The protest emphasizes how the Chinese coast guard's actions violated international regulations aimed at preventing collisions at sea and the 1982 U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea.

The territorial disputes in the South China Sea have long been regarded as a flashpoint and a delicate fault line in the rivalry between the United States and China in the region.

Despite international rulings invalidating China's territorial claims, Beijing maintains ownership over the strategic waterway, rejecting the 2016 ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration.

The tense confrontation on August 5 involved Philippine navy personnel on board chartered supply boats cruising toward Second Thomas Shoal, escorted by Philippine coast guard ships.

A Chinese coast guard ship used a powerful water cannon to block the Filipinos from the shoal, which China also claims.

The Chinese ship's actions were deemed to be in disregard of the safety of those on board and a violation of international law, according to the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

The excessive and offensive actions by the Chinese coast guard prevented one of the Filipino boats from unloading supplies required by Filipino troops stationed at the shoal on the BRP Sierra Madre, a Philippine navy ship that was deliberately marooned on the shoal in 1999.

The ship now symbolizes Manila's territorial claim to the atoll.

US and China Over South China Sea

The United States, although not laying any claims to the South China Sea, has frequently criticized China's aggressive actions and conducted patrols and military exercises with regional allies to uphold freedom of navigation and overflight.

China has warned the US to stop meddling in what it considers a purely Asian dispute, threatening unspecified repercussions.

As tensions continue to escalate in the South China Sea, the international community closely watches the situation, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the longstanding disputes involving China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Brunei.

The conflict remains a sensitive issue with far-reaching implications for regional stability and global trade.
