Joliot-Curie Peace Medal

The ‘Joliot-Curie Peace Medal,’ established in 1950, was designed to honor those who have made substantial contributions in the fight against imperialism and fascism while championing the cause of humanity and global peace. When selecting recipients for this prestigious accolade, special attention was given to the enduring commitment of Bangabandhu to the cause of peace.

Why Bangabandhu received this recognition?

From his early days as a student, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman actively engaged in advocating for the rights of oppressed individuals and championed the cause of non-violence. Following the country’s partition in 1947, he spearheaded the Bengali language movement, tirelessly working to secure rights through peaceful means. However, his commitment to non-violence led to his prolonged imprisonment. In 1952, while incarcerated, he initiated a hunger strike in protest of the Pakistani authorities’ use of force against peaceful student demonstrators. Concerned about his deteriorating health and the potential for widespread unrest, the authorities ultimately released him. That same year, as a young leader of the Awami League, he participated in the China Peace Conference.

Later on, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman took part in the 1956 World Peace Council conference held in Sweden. During this gathering, he reaffirmed his promises to global peace, declaring, ‘World peace is the guiding principle of my life. I stand with the oppressed, the repressed, the exploited, and those yearning for freedom, regardless of their place of residence. Our aim is to ensure peace prevails throughout the world and is strengthened.’

Before the Partition in 1946, during the Calcutta riots, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, as a student leader working under Chief Minister Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy, tirelessly worked to promote peace. He actively campaigned to prevent religious conflicts and displayed remarkable courage by risking his life to protect individuals, irrespective of their religious backgrounds. Whether it was Muslims facing attacks from Hindus or Hindus facing attacks from Muslims, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman intervened to rescue and safeguard both communities.

Throughout his life, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman participated in international peace conferences, expressing his strong commitment to world peace. He worked to establish peace during the Calcutta riots in 1946, regardless of religious affiliations, which influenced his non-communal political stance.

Bangabandhu strongly opposed war and violence and, after Bangladesh’s independence, promoted a foreign policy of ‘Friendship to all, Malice towards none.’ He led rehabilitation efforts for millions of displaced people and aimed to provide housing for the homeless.

Humanity and World Peace: Bangabandhu to Sheikh Hasina

Awami League Chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is steadfastly following in the footsteps of her father, Bangabandhu, dedicated to preserving the legacy of peace. Consequently, she has ensured the prosecution of those responsible for heinous crimes against humanity during the Liberation War, conducting transparent and thorough trials. Even the assassins of the Father of the Nation have faced justice through regular judicial processes. Today, Bangladesh stands tall in the international arena due to the resolute determination and ideals of Bangabandhu’s daughter.

During the challenging times of the pandemic, Sheikh Hasina displayed a strong resolve to protect the lives of her citizens and safeguard the country’s economy. In her role as the head of the government, she consistently communicated with the public through television and the Internet, ensuring they were well-informed. Her forward-thinking approach has made Bangladesh a global exemplar in effectively addressing the challenges posed by the coronavirus.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina demonstrated remarkable courage in the face of various conspiracies, taking bold steps such as overseeing the construction of a versatile bridge spanning the formidable Padma River. Despite enduring years of mockery and ridicule, even while holding the highest office in the government, she refrained from taking punitive actions against her detractors without due process. Instead, she responded to criticism through initiatives focused on development and constructive endeavors.

In addition, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s village-centered community healthcare program has gained international recognition from the United Nations. This initiative aims to provide healthcare services to every citizen in the country. A recent United Nations resolution on community-based healthcare in Bangladesh, titled ‘Community Clinic Based Primary Health Care: A Participatory and Inclusive Approach to Achieving Universal Health Services,’ was unanimously endorsed.

The successful implementation of this resolution holds the potential to significantly enhance the healthcare systems of billions of people worldwide through the introduction of community clinic-based health systems. Sheikh Hasina, Bangabandhu’s daughter, has consistently responded to criticism with constructive actions. The completion of the once-deemed unattainable Padma Bridge stands as a testament to her determination and self-funded efforts, symbolizing Bangladesh’s global strength.

Sheikh Hasina’s pioneering leadership has positively impacted the lives of over 20 million people. Her six-point solution for poverty eradication has gained approval at the United Nations General Assembly, inspiring nations worldwide to adopt her poverty reduction policy.

Under her visionary guidance, Bangladesh has made significant strides in achieving the goals outlined in Vision 2021. Indicators such as per capita income, life expectancy, access to electricity, and digital service inclusion reflect the remarkable progress achieved under Sheikh Hasina’s leadership.

In 2020, she introduced Vision 2041, charting a path for Bangladesh to attain developed nation status within the next 20 years. By the end of 2041, our per capita income is projected to exceed $12,500, poverty will be eradicated, economic growth is set to reach 9%, and power production will soar to 56,734 megawatts.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has advanced Bangladesh towards sovereignty, dignity, and technological progress in alignment with her father’s vision. The younger generation aspires to promote peace across Bengal’s skies, following Bangabandhu’s legacy of peace through the establishment of Bangladesh, under his daughter’s leadership.
