MOON TO EARTHQUAKE: JAMAAT-E-ISLAMI’S WEB OF THEOLOGICAL DECEPTION

The recent passing of Delwar Hossain Sayeedi, a notable figure within the ranks of Jamaat-eIslami Bangladesh and was in jail for a life term for the 1971 genocide case, has once again ignited a fervent discourse surrounding the organization’s skewed interpretation of Islam. Jamaat-e-Islami, a political entity in Bangladesh founded upon the extremist theories of Abul Ala Maududi, a globally recognized figure based in Pakistan and the founder of Jamaat worldwide, combined with the theological doctrines of Abdul Wahhab Najdi (1703–1792 in Najd in Central Arabia), has managed to rekindle discussions on their distorted understanding of the faith. Rooted in the radical ideology of Abul Ala Maududi, a figure hailing from Pakistan, the organization has been the subject of critical analysis for propagating an extreme perspective on political Islam. Additionally, the theological beliefs espoused by Abdul Wahhab Najdi, an Arab interpreter, have garnered worldwide criticism for their distorted and extremist portrayal of Islam. This regrettable distortion has resulted in the transformation of the once-enlightening essence of Islam into an extremist ideology.

The discourse surrounding their understanding of Islam—devised from the extremist theories of Maududi and the misinterpreted theological tenets of Najdi—stands as a stark reminder of the potency of ideas and beliefs in shaping the trajectory of religious interpretations. The legacy of Jamaat-e-Islami’s interpretations, marred by the ideologies of Maududi and Najdi, underscores the dire need for a nuanced, balanced understanding of Islam—one that fosters tolerance, coexistence, and an authentic connection to the teachings of the faith.

EXPLOITING NATURAL EVENTS TO PEDDLE MANIPULATION

Following the demise of war criminal Delawar Hossain Sayeedi, the Jamaat ignited an outbreak of spontaneous violence and this spotlight has been cast once more on the tumultuous amalgamation of these ideologies within Jamaat-e-Islami.

Unleashing a nightmarish scenario, the entire Shahbag area became a battleground of car vandalism and chaos. This sinister incident once again laid bare the inherently fascist and terrorist nature of Jamaat-e-Islami. Astonishingly, even in the face of undeniable evidence, Jamaat remained unrepentant.

During Sayeedi’s passing, a seismic event rattled the nation, and Jamaat seized the opportunity to exploit this natural occurrence to confound the devout of Bangladesh. Cunningly attempting to establish a link between Sayeedi’s death and the earthquake, Jamaat sought to manipulate and sow terror among the populace. This tactic harkened back to their stratagems in 1971, when they disseminated misinformation to lead the masses astray. Notably, they even issued fatwas proclaiming that if freedom fighters extended sanctuary to anyone, they would forfeit their Muslim identity, becoming Hindus instead. Jamaat wielded a range of fatwas as tools of manipulation, further stoking the fires of chaos and perpetrating crimes against humanity.

Even in the face of international tribunal justice for Delawar Hossain Sayeedi, Jamaat-e-Islami doggedly persisted in exploiting the religious sentiments of the people by peddling supernatural narratives. Their tactics remained relentless and unwavering, centered on the art of manipulation. When figures like Delawar Hossain Sayeedi met their end, Jamaat attempted to craft heroic narratives, conveniently using the backdrop of natural events. Natural earthquakes struck various parts of the country, prompting the followers of Jamaat to claim that the Earth trembled not only with the sorrow of Sayeedi’s passing but also due to the anguish of the heavens themselves. This vile practice represents a mechanism in Jamaat’s relentless cycle of manipulation and terror, which deliberately confounds people in the name of religion, perpetrating violence against humanity.

After Sayeedi’s death, natural earthquakes struck various parts of the country, prompting the followers of Jamaat to claim that the Earth trembled not only with the sorrow of Sayeedi’s passing but also due to the anguish of the heavens themselves. They present this as an example of the earthquake’s connection to his death. However, religious decisions on such matters are distinct.

“The sun and the moon are among the countless signs of Allah. An eclipse does not occur due to the death or birth of anyone.”

(Bukhari-1043, Muslim-915)

An instance from the past sheds light. A Hadith states, “On the day of the passing of Ibrahim, the son of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), a solar eclipse occurred. At that time, we, the companions, were discussing that such an event happened due to the death of the Prophet’s son. Upon hearing our discussion, the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said, “The sun and the moon are among the countless signs of Allah. An eclipse does not occur due to the death or birth of anyone.” (Bukhari-1043, Muslim-915). This insight unveils the climax of the argument, as even in the face of natural phenomena like earthquakes and eclipses, religious decisions remain separate and independent from such occurrences.

FACT-CHECKERS DISPEL FALSE VIRAL CLAIMS OF JAMAAT SUPPORTERS

After the death of Sayeedi, a piece of information began circulating on Facebook, claiming that a photo showed Sayeedi exiting the Holy Kaaba Sharif. The caption accompanying the photo suggested that Sayeedi was one of only five individuals who had entered the Kaaba without permission. However, factcheckers investigated this claim and found it to be entirely false. Sayeedi had no permission to enter the Kaaba, and such an event had never occurred.

The source of this information, which had been circulating on Facebook for an extended period, was traced back to a post made by an account named Saiful Bin Nurul Islam (Archive) on October 27, 2015. However, this post did not provide any credible source for the information. Subsequently, despite the prolonged circulation of this information through copy-pasting on Facebook, no credible sources or posts were found that supported the claim that anyone, including Sayeedi, could enter the Kaaba without permission.

Furthermore, the claim that Sayeedi and five other individuals from around the world could enter the Kaaba without permission gained traction through a viral headline, but through contextual keyword searches on Saudi Arabian and other international media outlets, no information supporting this claim could be found. Websites like “Haramain Sharifain” did provide detailed information about the construction and interior of the Kaaba, but there was no information about unauthorized entry. Various sources, such as the British news magazine “The Week” and the US-based media website “VOX,” have explained that due to the increasing number of Hajj pilgrims, access to the Kaaba is restricted. Only specific individuals with special permission can enter the Kaaba for prayer. While there is no possibility of entry for non-Muslims, it is allowed for some Muslims during certain times. However, this permission is granted to a very limited number of individuals.

In search of more information about entering the Kaaba, investigations were carried out through sources like “Arab News,” “zamzam.com,” and “Haramain Sharifain.” The reports indicated that previously, the Kaaba was open for entry three times a month for prayer, but this practice was later discontinued due to the increasing number of Hajj pilgrims. At present, only respected Muslim figures are allowed to enter the Kaaba for prayer. The sources unanimously stated that unauthorized entry to the Kaaba is not possible.

Therefore, despite various reports and investigations, no credible information has been found to support the claim that only five people, including Sayeedi, were allowed to enter the Kaaba without permission. Presently, only esteemed Muslim individuals are permitted to enter the Kaaba upon invitation by the Saudi Arabian government. In addition, a claim titled “False Announcement Regarding Funeral Prayer of Maulana Delwar Hossain Sayeedi’s Absentia Janaza at Kaaba Sharif” was spread on the internet. An investigation by the Reumer Scanner Team reveals that the assertion that Maulana Delwar Hossain Sayeedi’s absentia janaza (funeral prayer) was performed at Kaaba Sharif is false. In reality, his janaza was conducted in absentia at various places around the world, with the names of deceased individuals regularly announced before the janaza prayers.

During the investigation, a number of news pieces are also found. For instance, on May 13, 2022, Saudi Arabian media outlet Saudi Gazette published a report titled ‘Funeral prayer in absentia performed in Two Holy Mosques for late UAE president,’ covering the funeral prayer performed for Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the UAE, at Kabaa Sharif and Masjid an-Nabawi in Madinah, based on the directive of King Salman. In addition, information is discovered from Qatar-based Al Jazeera’s sources that funeral prayers in absentia were also performed at Masjid al-Haram and Masjid an-Nabawi in 2018 for Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was a victim of a murder case.

An investigation by the Reumer Scanner Team reveals that the assertion that Maulana Delwar Hossain Sayeedi’s absentia janaza (GAYEBANA JANAZA) was performed at Kaaba Sharif is false

Furthermore, in 2011, Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud had issued directives for funeral prayers in absentia to be performed in all mosques of Saudi Arabia, including Masjid al-Haram and Masjid an-Nabawi, for Saudi Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. Therefore, it is evident that funeral prayers in absentia at Masjid alHaram and Masjid an-Nabawi are not uncommon occurrences. The claim that only three individuals, including Sayeedi, have had funeral prayers performed in absentia at Kabaa Sharif stands baseless in the entirety of world history

Notably, despite efforts by Delwar Hosseain Sayeedi’s political party Jamaat-e-Islami and verification through his verified Islamic Facebook page, no information can be found regarding the funeral prayer claim for Sayeedi in Kabaa Sharif. The investigation establishes that the claim regarding the absentia janaza prayers of three individuals, including Maulana Delwar Hossain Sayeedi, being performed at Kaaba Sharif is baseless. The janaza prayers were organized by individuals and broadcast through various channels. The assertion that only three individuals in the history of the world had their absentia janaza prayers conducted at Kaaba Sharif is also not supported by evidence.

UNMASKING THE AUTHENTIC PERSONA OF ABUL ALA MAUDUDI, THE FOUNDER OF JAMAAT

In the crucible of 1941, Abul Ala Maududi forged a path that would leave an indelible mark on the landscape of Islamic thought in the subcontinent. He gave birth to the Jamaat-i-Islami (JI), an entity meticulously shaped after the Leninist mold. Here, the idea crystallized—a select cadre of committed and erudite vanguards, charged with the audacious mission of wresting state power through revolutionary means.

In the annals of his thought, an essay, later reincarnated in the 1980 compilation titled “Come, Let Us Change This World,” reverberated with critique. Maududi hurled condemnation at the ulema, accusing them of stagnation, of clinging to the past like fossils encumbering the emergence of novel research and progressive thinking in Islamic scholarship.

However, in 1977, Maududi’s alliance with the Ziaul Haq dictatorship ignited vehement censure. Accusations flew, charging him with a Machiavellian scheme to grasp state power through a military dictator.

This contentious move triggered a fierce critique of his ideas from the modernist Islamic scholar, Dr. Fazal Rehman Malik. In “Islam and Modernity,” Dr. Malik painted Maududi as a populist journalist, not a scholar, branding his writings as ‘shallow’ and crafted solely to captivate bewildered youth yearning for an illusory faith-driven utopia.

Maududi’s oeuvre, brilliant yet enigmatic, straddles contradictions. He employed Western political concepts to elucidate the modern Islamic State, yet chided modernist Muslims for adopting Western constructs. He endorsed neither monarchy nor conservative Arab monarchies, yet paradoxically refrained from criticism. He adroitly affixed ‘Islamic’ as a prefix to various Western economic and political notions, while vehemently opposing ‘IslamicSocialism’ from his leftist adversaries in the 1960s.

In the Princeton Encyclopedia of Islamic Political Thought, Professor Irfan Ahmed posited that there were not merely one but many Maududis. Elements of Leninism, Hegel’s dualism, Jalaluddin Afghani’s Pan-Islamism, and a tapestry of modern political theories interwove in Maududi’s intellectual tapestry.

VIOLENCE AGAINST OPPOSING SCHOLARS

Shaykh Nurul Islam Faruqi, a name resonating throughout the nation for his illustrious creation, ‘Kafela,’ broadcasted on Channel I during the sacred month of Ramadan, emerges as an exemplar unveiling the stark intolerance orchestrated by the Jamaat within the fabric of our country. Faruqi, a devout Sufi adherent, found himself ensnared in a relentless barrage of vitriolic words spewed by the leaders of the Jamaat. This torrent of hate-laden rhetoric was accompanied by insidious threats, menacing his very existence, and an unjust prohibition from embarking on a pilgrimage to the lands of Saudi Arabia. Such reprehensible actions bore testimony to the sinister motives driving the Jamaat’s agenda, aiming to silence the resonant voice that emerged from the heart of the Sufi-Sunni community.

Faruqi, standing tall as an articulate advocate for his beliefs, possessed an innate ability to illuminate the hidden facets of Wahhabi and Maududi followers strewn across our land. His eloquent orations, beamed across television screens and echoing through the nation, pierced through the facade of misrepresentation, revealing the unvarnished truth. The Jamaat activists and Wahhabi followers, perturbed by his unyielding dedication, sought vehemently to muzzle his fervent declarations, resorting to a campaign of intimidation and VIOLENCE AGAINST OPPOSING SCHOLARS UNMASKING THE AUTHENTIC PERSONA OF ABUL ALA MAUDUDI, THE FOUNDER OF JAMAAT threats. Yet, resilient and unyielding, Faruqi remained undeterred, refusing to relinquish his sacred duty to unveil reality’s face.

Tragically, the Jamaat’s malevolent machinations reached a chilling culmination in 2013, as they snuffed out Faruqi’s life within the confines of his own abode. After the killing, the activists of Jamaat across the country distributed sweets to them, celebrating the joy of killing an Islamic preacher! His demise stands as a somber testament to the lengths the Jamaat was willing to go to suppress the truth he held aloft. Beyond this appalling incident, the tentacles of the Jamaat’s aggression have wound themselves around countless other chapters of the sufi Sunni community and the oter religious believers of Bangladesh. With unabashed audacity, the leaders of the Jamaat have championed the destruction of cherished majaars, monuments of spiritual significance, Mandirs etc. This concerted effort to sow seeds of discord and enmity amongst those who embrace these hallowed spaces bears witness to their malevolent intent.

TRUE IDEOLOGY OF “MAUDUDI” GROUP OR JAMAT-E-ISLAMI

The ensuing list delineates several erroneous convictions propagated by Maududi and his adherents, specifically the activists of Jamaat-e-Islami, accompanied by pertinent references:

  1. Hazrat Noah (peace be upon him) had the fervor of Jahiliyah “But when Allah informed him that loving a son who leaves the Truth and supports falsehood just because he is born to you is only a sentiment of JAHILIYAH (Allah forbid). (Tafhim ul Quran, P.344, V.2, 1967)
  2. Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) was an Impoverished Monk “What sort of logic is this, that an impoverished monk (Musa, peace be upon him) took a quarterstaff in his hand while standing up and said that He is a Prophet of the Lord of the universes.” (Tarjuman al Quran, P 34, May 65)
  3. Hazrat Yunus (peace be upon him) had a deficiency in the duty of Prophethood (Message) “Although after inquiring and reflecting on Quranic verses and the scripture of Hazrat Yunus, it becomes clear that Hazrat Yunus (peace be upon him) committed a deficiency in the duty of his message.” (Tafhim ul Quran, Surah Yunus, Vol 2, Hashia (commentary) Page 312)
  4. Every being is a slave of Allah, whether they are a Prophet or a Satan! “Every person is the slave of God, whether they are believers (Momin) or non-Muslims (Kufars). The same applies to a Prophet and a Satan.” (In essence, Maududi is suggesting that Prophets and Satan are of the same caliber or status. Allah forbid!)
  5. Sin of Musa (peace be upon him)! Before Prophethood, Musa (peace be upon him) committed a very grave sin. (Allah forbid) (Rasail-va-masail, Page 31, Published 12th edition, 1954)
  6. Prophets cannot always maintain a higher status! (Allah forbid) “Prophets are also ‘humans,’ and no human is capable of maintaining higher excellence at all times, which is essential for a Mo’min (believer). Sometimes, due to some serious psychological issues, a person of higher eminence like Prophets can also be subject to their human weaknesses.” (Tarjuman al Quran Page 34, June 1946) In some places, Maududi goes even further than Wahhabi ideology, misrepresenting or misquoting Quranic verses and displaying their ignorance.
  7. Decisions of the Prophets Were Wrong “Prophets (peace be upon them) also made wrong decisions and arguments, and they also failed. They were put through trials, and even when they committed sins, they were punished.” (Tarjuma al Quran, P 158, May 1955)
  8. Prophet Cannot Be Cured of Satan! “The cure for Satan’s deterioration, so that he cannot find a place to enter, cannot be provided by the Prophets (peace be upon them). So who are we to assert that?” (Tarjuman al Quran P. 57, June 1946)
  9. The Actions (Words or Deeds) of Sahaba (may Allah be pleased with them) are Not a Shariya Hujjat! (i.e., an argument) “This narration is usually defined as ‘my Ashab (companions) are like stars,’ and whoever is followed among them will find a way. In fact, in books of Fiqh (jurisprudence), it has been stated in several places, but in my knowledge, I didn’t find any Sufi or Faqih (jurist) who uses this as a proof for the actions and deeds of the Sahaba.” (Tarjuman al Quran Nov 63)
  10. No Mujadid (Renewer) is Worthwhile in the Ummah! “From a historical perspective, we can see that no real Jurist (Mujadid) has been born yet… there were some who came close but did not succeed.” (Tajdid wa Ahya-e-Deen Page 49)
  11. The Translated Quran is Empty of the Soul of the Quran! “During the reading of the translation, one might be left wondering, ‘Is this really that BOOK, whose challenge to the world is to bring its equal?'” (Tafhim ul Quran, P 7, Vol 1)
  12. The Knowledge of the Quran Should Not Be Based on Old Scriptures! “For the Quran and Sunna of the Prophet, knowledge is essential, but not from old exegesis and hadith (sayings). The teachers must be those who already have a comprehensive understanding of the Quran and Sunnah.” (Tanfihaat, P 133, Tarjuman al Quran 1939)

As you have read, this is the founder of Jamat-e-Islami, Maududi, for whom the Prophets may commit sins. He suggests that in 1700 years of Islamic history, he didn’t find a single scholar (Muhadith). In fact, it shows the lack of knowledge of Molvi Maududi and the deception of Satan. He believes that only he is a scholar, and all others, including the Sahaba and the Prophets, are subordinate to him. This is total blasphemy and the true and ugly face of Jamat-e-Islami, which is essentially the party of Satan.

Now there are the very preachers of Jamaat-e-Islami, steadfastly and fervently espousing Maududi’s doctrines throughout the nation for an extended duration, as they strongly holds believe in Maududi and his ideology. Foremost among them, Delowar Hossain Sayeedi, emerged as a resounding voice, playing a pivotal role in disseminating Maududi’s beliefs far and wide, notably through his Tafsir Ul Quran mahfils. Hence, it becomes clear that Jamaat E islami and its vocal person Maulana Delwar Hossain Sayeedi has been attempting to distort the interpretation of the Quran in the footsteps of the infamous Maulana Maududi, with the goal of misleading the people of this country. Moreover, these Maududi followers’ distorted interpretation only seeks to deceive people and lead them into accepting a manipulated version of Islam in the name of Islam, particularly within the Wahhabi and Maududi sects. These distorted ideologies label any action or matter as ‘shirk’ without any solid basis. Moreover, for several years, under the name of ‘Islamic Society for Welfare of the Society,’ an organization attributed to Jamaat-e-Islami, the main speaker of their so-called ‘Tafsir-ul-Quran’ meetings—held annually—has been heard branding numerous Islamic practices as polytheism.
