Senator Fetterman's struggle with speech difficulties during the I-95 bridge collapse statement was not an isolated incident. It is part of a larger health journey that he has been on, which has included a stroke and hospitalization for depression.

According to a report by Abraham Gutman and Tom Avril published in The Philadelphia Inquirer on April 17, 2023, U.S. Senator John Fetterman suffered a stroke on May 13, 2022, just four days before his Democratic primary win. The initial reports from the Fetterman campaign were optimistic, with Fetterman expressing confidence in his recovery. However, in a subsequent statement, he acknowledged the gravity of the situation, revealing that he had come close to losing his life.

Following the stroke, Fetterman took time away from the campaign trail and public eye to focus on his recovery. Throughout the fall and winter, his campaign and Senate office shared updates on his stroke recovery and cognitive test results that showed normal functioning for a person his age.

In February 2023, Fetterman sought medical attention at George Washington University Hospital after experiencing lightheadedness. He remained hospitalized for two days, and thorough examinations excluded the possibility of another stroke or seizures. Subsequently, in March 2023, Fetterman was admitted to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for treatment of depression. The medical team at Walter Reed, as reported by The Philadelphia Inquirer, found no evidence of a second stroke and noted stable neurological assessments.

According to a news article by Holly Otterbein published on June 3, 2022, in Politico, it was revealed that U.S. Senator John Fetterman had a type of abnormal heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation (A-fib). In the article, Otterbein reports that Fetterman disclosed his atrial fibrillation diagnosis, linking it to the clot that caused his stroke.

In October 2022, Fetterman's primary care physician provided an update on his heart health, stating that his heart vitals were within normal range, and his lipid profile was excellent. This indicated that his heart was functioning well, and his overall cardiovascular health was positive. 

During Fetterman's stay at Walter Reed in March 2023 for depression treatment, doctors conducted evaluations to assess his heart health. They did not find evidence of blood clots in his heart, and they measured his heart's pumping capacity, which was within normal limits. This was seen as an improvement compared to the previous year. 

Additionally, according to a report by Candy Woodall in USA TODAY, Fetterman's medical team at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center diagnosed him with mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss during his treatment for depression. As a result of this diagnosis, he was fitted with hearing aids to help alleviate his auditory difficulties.
