Jihadist Threat Looms: Coastal West Africa Braces for Possible Infiltration

International jihadists are flocking to northern Mali, posing a threat to countries in the Maghreb.

In a region already grappling with security challenges, the specter of jihadists seizing parts of Coastal West Africa has sparked growing concern among countries in the Gulf of Guinea. Benin, Togo, Ghana, and Côte d'Ivoire have been gripped by fear as the militant groups that have overrun vast expanses of the Sahel region inch closer to their borders. With militants already operating in forested areas along the Benin-Burkina Faso border, and an alarming uptick in jihadist attacks in northern Benin and Togo, the international community and regional powers are now forced to confront the pressing question: could jihadists establish a foothold in coastal West Africa?

To shed light on this alarming situation, Crisis Group's Africa Deputy Director Pauline Bax and Sahel Senior Analyst Ibrahim Yahaya Ibrahim join Richard on the latest episode of "Hold Your Fire!" podcast. They delve into the factors driving the militants' southward march, beginning with an examination of how jihadist groups managed to capture vast swaths of Burkina Faso, a country that shares borders with several Gulf of Guinea nations and potentially serves as a gateway to coastal West Africa.

During the discussion, the experts explore two crucial perspectives: whether the presence of militants in the northern regions of coastal countries should be seen as spillover from the Sahel or as a consequence of deep-rooted issues in neglected localities. They also analyze the methods employed by jihadists to recruit fighters and raise funds, highlighting the need for coordinated efforts to counter these activities.

The policies of governments in the region, as well as the level of coordination among them, come under scrutiny as the podcast guests assess the response to this imminent threat. Furthermore, the involvement of Western capitals and Russia, among other external powers, is explored to understand how international actors are contributing to regional security dynamics. Drawing lessons from the Sahel, the experts emphasize the importance of coastal West African countries learning from past mistakes and adapting their strategies accordingly.

The evolving situation in coastal West Africa necessitates a unified front against the encroaching jihadist menace. As governments and international partners grapple with the complexities of the region's security landscape, it is imperative to confront the threat head-on, ensuring that coastal West Africa remains resilient and impervious to the pernicious ambitions of extremist groups.
