Assam to Launch ‘Khel Maharan’ Sports Talent Hunt from November 1

Guwahati: The Assam government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has announced the launch of ‘Khel Maharan’, a state-wide Sports Talent Hunt, starting November 1. This initiative aims to identify and nurture grassroots sports talent across the state.

The decision was finalized during a state cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sarma in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Spanning from November 1 this year to January 10 next year, ‘Khel Maharan’ will be conducted in various stages: Gram Panchayat/ULB/Wards level, Village Council Development Committee/MAC level of regions like Bodoland Territorial Region, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, and Dima Hasao Autonomous Council. It will also cover assembly constituencies, districts, and culminate at the state level.

Assam Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah confirmed that the state cabinet has allocated ample funds for the event. He stated, “More than 50 lakh sportspersons are expected to compete in five disciplines: Athletics (100m, 200m, 400m & 800m), Football, Kabaddi, Volleyball, and Kho-Kho.” Competitions will be organized in four age categories: Under 19 (Men and Women) and Above 19 (Men and Women).

The state-level finals will be hosted in five cities: Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Silchar, Kokrajhar, and Diphu, with each city spotlighting the final event of a specific discipline.
