Election Dates in Five States Announced by Election Commission of India

The Election Commission held a press conference to announce the dates for assembly elections in five states. The polls will take place on different dates in each state – Madhya Pradesh on November 17, Rajasthan on November 23, Chhattisgarh on November 7 and 17, Telangana on November 30, and Mizoram on November 7. The results will be announced on December 3. The main competition is between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress in these states. MP, Rajasthan, Mizoram, and Telangana will have elections in one phase, while Chhattisgarh will have elections in two phases.

The current governments in all these states will end their tenure between December 2023 and January 2024. The number of seats up for elections are 230 in MP, 200 in Rajasthan, 119 in Telangana, 90 in Chhattisgarh, and 40 in Mizoram.

According to the Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, a total of 16.14 crore people will cast their votes in these elections, with 8.2 crore male voters and 7.8 crore female voters. Around 60.2 lakh new voters between the ages of 18 to 19 will participate for the first time. Additionally, there are 15.39 lakh voters who are about to turn 18 and have already applied for voting. There will be a total of 679 assembly seats and 1.77 lakh voting booths across the five states. The voter list will be issued on October 17. Elderly people can vote from home by filling out a form.

The total number of voters in each state are as follows: Madhya Pradesh – 5.6 crores, Rajasthan – 5.25 crores, Telangana – 3.17 crores, Chhattisgarh – 2.03 crores, Mizoram – 8.52 lakhs. These assembly elections are considered important as they are seen as the power semi-finals before the Lok Sabha elections next year.
