Overview:

The Hungarian Scholarship Board Office, under the auspices of the Hungarian Minister of Education and Culture, offers scholarships to international students, professors of higher education institutions, and research fellows. These scholarships aim to facilitate further professional development and experience within Hungarian higher education or research institutions. Scholarships are available under two systems:

Bilateral Agreements: Scholarships are awarded to citizens of countries (and territories) with valid and effective educational cooperation programs or bilateral agreements signed by the Hungarian Government or the Ministry of Education and Culture of Hungary and the relevant ministry of the applicant’s country (or territory).

Scholarship Pool: Various types of scholarships are available to students from selected countries/territories.

These scholarships cover different categories, including semester/partial studies, postgraduate studies, research, full PhD programs, partial PhD studies, postdoctoral studies, research stays, and summer courses.

Scholarships are open to students and researchers in all fields of arts and sciences, and the host institution will be determined in advance.

Scholarship Pool Eligible Countries: Albania, Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Cyprus, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Korean Republic, Kuwait, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico, The Netherlands, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Romania, Singapore, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Syria, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States of America.

Bilateral Agreements Eligible Countries: China, Colombia, Mongolia, Palestine, Yemen, and Vietnam.

Scholarship Value/Inclusions:

The scholarship benefits vary depending on the category:

  • Semester/partial studies: HUF 40,460 stipend per month, paid by the host institution, and student hostel accommodation in a university residence hall paid by the scholarship holder.
  • Postgraduate studies, research: HUF 79,200 stipend per month and HUF 70,000 accommodation allowance per month (for scholarships lasting 21 days or shorter, accommodation allowance and a stipend of HUF 3,000/day), paid by the HSB Office.
  • Full PhD program: HUF 100,000 per month, paid by the host institution, and student hostel accommodation in a university residence hall paid by the scholarship holder.
  • Partial PhD studies: HUF 100,000 per month, paid by the host institution, and student hostel accommodation in a university residence hall paid by the scholarship holder.
  • Postdoctoral studies, research: HUF 118,800 per month and HUF 80,000 accommodation allowance per month, paid by the HSB Office.
  • Research stay: HUF 118,800 per month and HUF 80,000 accommodation allowance per month (for scholarships lasting 21 days or shorter, accommodation allowance and a stipend of HUF 3,000/day), paid by the HSB Office.
  • Summer courses in 2013: Tuition-free courses, free accommodation, and meals.

Eligibility:

Eligibility criteria vary based on the type of scholarship:

  • Semester/partial studies: Undergraduate (BA/BSc) and graduate (MA/MSc) students (enrolled at foreign higher education institutions), especially those majoring in Hungarian Language and Literature and students participating in single-degree track university programs.
  • Postgraduate studies, research: Applicants holding a Master’s degree or an equivalent university degree, including PhD students who intend to do research for their dissertation (PhD students cannot earn credits during the scholarship period).
  • Full PhD program: Only students proficient in Hungarian can apply, and the scholarship is conditional upon successful entrance exam/admission to the respective doctoral school.
  • Partial PhD studies: Applicants must be enrolled in a PhD program at an accredited higher education institution in their home country or in a foreign country (but not in Hungary).
  • Postdoctoral studies, research: Applicants must hold a PhD or an equivalent degree.
  • Research stay: Available for associate professors or high-ranking academics as well as researchers holding a minimum of a PhD or an equivalent degree.
  • Summer courses in 2013: Applicants must select courses from the list of “Summer Courses 2013” on the HSB website and can participate in only one course.

Application Instructions:

Applicants must submit their applications online through the HSB website and provide a printed version sent by post. The application deadline for those applying under bilateral agreements may vary based on the national scholarship office of the applicant’s country. The general deadline is April 7, 2014.
