Let’s live peacefully and shame our saboteurs – Savannah executives of NPP, NDC

In a bid to prevent the recurrence of disruptions targeting presidential candidates at public gatherings, the Savannah Regional executives of both the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have joined forces.

Recent instances of Supporters from both sides hooting at presidential candidates, Dr. Mahamud Bawumia and John Mahama, during public functions in the region have spurred collaborative efforts to foster unity.

The NDC and NPP supporters engaged in hostile behaviour, with NPP supporters hooting at Mahama during the Yagbonwura's outdooring and the late Queen mother of Busunu's funeral rites. In retaliation, NDC supporters targeted Bawumia at the Yagbonwura's outdooring ceremony in Damongo.

To address the hostility, leaders of both parties have initiated a gala competition aimed at promoting unity ahead of the December elections. The competition, slated to begin on Friday night, April 26, involves regional executives from both political parties.

The initiative seeks to bring supporters of both parties to the table of peace, emphasizing their shared identity as descendants of Ndewura Jakpa. Moreover, the event aims to create a peaceful environment in anticipation of several upcoming celebrations, including the first anniversary of Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I and the 48th Annual Congress of Gonja Land Youth Association.

Savannah Regional NPP Chairman, Alhaji Iddrisu Sulemana, speaking on behalf of his NDC counterpart, Seidu Imoro, emphasized the necessity for both parties to collaborate and ensure their supporters refrain from displaying political animosity during activities.

The initiative has garnered support from various stakeholders, including Professor Kalamonia, who highlighted the significance of safeguarding the region's development and unity. He noted the presence of saboteurs aiming to sow discord but expressed confidence that the peace football gala would thwart their efforts.

The gala will be attended by prominent figures such as the King of Gonja, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale (I), paramount chiefs, and other dignitaries. Captains from both teams will be appointed as Peace Ambassadors, tasked with promoting peace not only during the 2024 elections but also in the future.
