Farmer accused of stealing rice, threatening pastor with death arraigned

Kwabena Seidu, also known as Agya Aboba, a 39-year-old farmer, has been arraigned on charges of theft, causing damage, and threatening the life of a pastor, whom he allegedly stole rice from. Seidu pleaded not guilty to the charges during the arraignment.

The Pakyi District Court, presided over by Madam Dora Nsiah Jackson, granted Seidu bail in the amount of GH¢10,000.00, with two sureties required to justify the bail. The court ordered him to return on May 2, 2024, for further proceedings.

According to Police Chief Inspector Christian Amartey, the complainant, Pastor Akwasi Wusu, is also a farmer residing in Kemenkyire. Seidu and the complainant are brothers and farmers, both living in Pakyi No 2. They farm on family land in Camp, a village near Pakyi No 2.

The prosecution outlined that in October 2023, the complainant allocated a portion of the family land to a witness named Kadiya Halidu to cultivate rice for them to share. After Halidu cultivated and harvested the rice, Seidu prevented the complainant from taking his share on January 19, 2024.

When the complainant attempted to retrieve his share, Seidu intervened, armed with a cutlass, and tore open the sacks containing the rice. Seidu allegedly threatened the complainant with death if he attempted to remove the sacks. Fearing for his life, the complainant reported the incident to the Pakyi No.2 Police station.

Subsequently, Seidu reportedly conveyed the thirteen sacks of rice to an unknown location. During interrogation, Seidu denied causing damage to the rice or threatening the complainant's life. However, he admitted to moving the sacks of rice, claiming ownership of the land and asserting that he had hired a farmer to cultivate the rice.

Following investigations, Seidu was charged with theft, causing damage, and threatening the life of the complainant, leading to his appearance before the court.
