In Accra, two teachers, Jephtern Kwame Nkrumah and James Kodia, have been formally charged with the illegal possession of Examination papers and conspiracy to commit a crime. The charges were laid in connection to their alleged possession of specific Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) papers, the Information Communication Technology (ICT) and French Language exams. The case was brought before an Accra Circuit Court where the accused pleaded not guilty.

The alleged incident occurred on September 16, 2020, at the Evangelical Presbyterian School in Mamprobi, Accra. According to the prosecution, the two teachers were found with snapshots of the 2020 BECE ICT practical questions and solved French language questions on their mobile phones. The court presided over by Mrs. Afia Owusua Appiah admitted both teachers to bail in the amount of GH¢ 50,000 each, with conditions including a surety each and fortnightly police reporting.

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Ebenezer Teye Okuffo, disclosed that the complaint originated from Lieutenant Colonel Rexford Adu (rtd), the Security Coordinator at the West African Examination Council (WAEC). An intelligence operation was subsequently launched by WAEC through agent Alex Doku, who traced the malpractice to the teachers' mobile devices during a monitoring session at the school.

Further investigation revealed that Nkrumah, who teaches at Nii Kojo Ababio Basic School in Accra, had instructed Kodia, a French and ICT tutor at Mamprobi Sempe 1 Basic School, to answer the examination questions. The examination papers were intended for the September 2020 BECE held nationwide.

The court has ordered the prosecution to file full disclosures within three weeks and has adjourned the case until May 20, 2024. The charges have been categorized as misdemeanors, but they highlight ongoing concerns about examination integrity within Ghana's education system.
