Ghana Medical Association opposes the establishment of new medical schools

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has voiced apprehensions regarding the proliferation of new medical schools by tertiary institutions in the country, citing potential risks to the standards and quality of medical training and practice. Dr. Frank Serebour, President of the GMA, cautioned against this trend, urging the government to prioritize the expansion of existing facilities to accommodate more trainees.

Dr. Serebour underscored the importance of upholding quality training and standards in the healthcare sector, expressing discontent with the establishment of new medical schools. He advocated for the adoption of the external teaching site concept, which he believes would ensure standards are maintained, quality is upheld, and adequate numbers are trained.

The concerns raised by the GMA coincide with the broader challenges facing Ghana's healthcare sector, particularly in healthcare delivery. Notably, the strain on health facilities serving as teaching hospitals has been identified as a significant issue.

In response to these challenges, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Bekwai Municipal Hospital to serve as a clinical training centre for medical students from KNUST. This collaboration aims to alleviate the pressure on Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in providing training for medical students from KNUST.

Joseph Osei-Owusu, MP for Bekwai and First Deputy Speaker of Ghana's Parliament, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting the necessity of medical student training and the willingness to expand facilities with adequate funding.

Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson, Vice Chancellor for KNUST, stressed the importance of maintaining standards in medical education, emphasizing the critical role health professionals play in caring for the population. She emphasized that standards must be upheld to ensure that healthcare professionals are equipped to provide quality care to patients.
