NDC criticizes relocation of Ameri Power Plant amid power sector financial woes

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti Region has voiced strong opposition to the government's decision to relocate the Ameri Power Plant from the Western Region to the Ashanti Region. The NDC questioned the rationale behind the move and urged the government to prioritize addressing the financial challenges affecting the power sector.

The NDC criticized the government's plan to recommission and rename the plant, originally inaugurated in 2015 during John Mahama's administration, labelling the decision as “another lie and deception” by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration.

President Akufo-Addo is set to commission the Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Project on Wednesday, April 17, with the aim of enhancing system voltage and stability in the middle and northern regions. The government asserts that the plant, expected to generate a minimum of 250 megawatts, is crucial for ensuring reliability and stability in the national grid.

However, the NDC in the Ashanti Region has called on the government to prioritize resolving the financial challenges plaguing the power sector instead of investing in the Relocation of the Ameri Power Plant.

Abass Nuruddeen, the Ashanti Regional Communications Officer for the NDC, criticized the relocation, stating that it is a misuse of scarce resources. He highlighted the $30 million budgeted for the relocation, arguing that these funds could have been better utilized to alleviate the plight of Ghanaians.

Nuruddeen questioned the excessive cost of relocating the Ameri Power Plant, emphasizing that the $35 million allocated for the relocation is over three times the amount requested by Otumfuo Osei Tutu for the renovation of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
